UNESCO has just announced the expansion of the Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC), admitting 72 new members from 46 countries, recognizing outstanding efforts in promoting lifelong learning at the local level.
Three Thai provinces, Rayong, Satun and Tak, were included in the new list, praised for their practical policies and initiatives to integrate learning into everyday life.
With this expansion, the GNLC network launched in 2013 has reached 425 cities in 91 countries, supporting learning opportunities for nearly 500 million people worldwide .
Ms. Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, stressed that education must "go beyond the classroom" and needs proactive leadership from cities.
"The 72 new Learning Cities announced by UNESCO today are redefining the concept of learning, turning every street, library, workplace, museum and home into a space of knowledge and innovation. By prioritizing education, from childhood to adulthood, these cities are empowering their citizens and opening up opportunities for all," she said.
UNESCO said that Learning Cities focus on practical outcomes such as: Retraining and upskilling the workforce, enhancing digital and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities for citizens of all ages, strengthening adult literacy skills and nurturing entrepreneurial thinking.
The new admissions include 11 capitals and mark the arrival of 12 countries, including Benin, the United States and Iraq, which are joining the Network for the first time.
Vietnam's representative is Hanoi , along with cities such as Lisbon (Portugal), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Cairo (Egypt), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia)... registered on this occasion.
