Kamala Harris criticized as 'billion-dollar disaster', in debt after election

"The truth is, this is just a monumental disaster, a $1 billion disaster," commented Li, a member of the Democratic National Finance Committee (DNC), on Fox & Friends Weekend.

Tens of millions of USD in debt

"They owe $20 million or $18 million or something like that. It's unbelievable. I helped raise millions of dollars of that. I have to take responsibility and explain what happened to some friends because I told them it was a race with a margin of error," she added.

The strategist said Harris's campaign chair, Jen O'Malley Dillon, " promised all of us that Harris would win."

"She even released videos saying Harris would win. I believed her, my donors believed her, and so they wrote big checks. I just feel like a lot of us were fooled."

Following Trump's resounding victory in the November 5th election, the Democratic Party began to clash over its strategy and who should be held accountable for the outcome. Some argued the party hadn't shifted far enough to the left, while moderates argued it had moved too far to the left, frightening more moderate supporters in swing states. Harris lost all seven battleground states.

Some within the party argue that the Democratic Party should restart and begin focusing more on messaging and better assessing voter sentiment.

Li said that even on election night, she heard Democrats expressing confidence in victory . “I asked them if they knew any insider numbers that I didn’t see, because I’d researched this very thoroughly and I didn’t see any basis for that confidence.”

Where did it all go wrong?

Harris's late start, her inability to differentiate herself from Biden, and the loss of key voter groups made victory impossible.

More than two years ago, in 2022, a New York Times poll showed that only 26% of Democrats wanted their president, Joe Biden, to represent the party again in the 2024 race. However, following the party's success in that year's midterm elections, the Democrats decided to endorse Biden as their candidate in 2024.

Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign has revealed many flaws.

Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign has revealed many flaws.

Only after his unsuccessful debate against Trump in June 2024 did Biden withdraw from the race. Harris had only four months to prepare and run her campaign. Despite some calls for the parties to go through a primary process to elect a new party leader, most influential Democratic figures – including former President Barack Obama – quickly endorsed Harris.

Ultimately, she was nominated without a primary. Harris thus never competed against other presidential candidates from within her own party.

Furthermore, in her campaign message, despite the vice president's attempts to separate her campaign from President Biden's, promising to "turn the page" and "not look back," Harris failed to make much of a difference. When asked if she would have done things differently from Biden over the past four years, Harris responded, "nothing has crossed my mind yet... however, I've been involved in most of the impactful decisions."

Ultimately, Harris also lost voters in several key constituencies that had previously supported the Democratic Party, and lost the support of Arab-American and Muslim voters because of the Biden administration's support for Israel's wars in Gaza and Lebanon.
