A 6-year-old male patient, NT, residing in Binh Duong , was transferred to Children's Hospital 2 (Ho Chi Minh City) in critical condition due to an electric shock.
On March 4th, Dr. Huynh Thi Thuy Kieu (Deputy Head of the Emergency Department - Children's Hospital 2) stated that the department had just admitted and was actively treating a male patient, T.
According to the medical history, the family reported that T. was playing when he accidentally touched a stainless steel table next to a B40 wire mesh fence, which was in contact with an electrical wire. After touching it, T. fainted at the table, and his family only discovered him about 5 minutes later. T. was taken to a local medical facility for first aid and then transferred to Children's Hospital 2.
Despite receiving intensive resuscitation treatment from the doctors and nurses in the Emergency Department, the patient's condition remains very serious.
According to Dr. Kieu, the Emergency Department receives approximately 3-5 cases of children injured by electricity each year. The cause is often due to families repairing electrical equipment, and children accidentally stepping on or touching the wires. This is an extremely dangerous accident that can immediately affect a person's life.
Doctors examine a child patient in the Emergency Department at Children's Hospital 2.
"Electric current penetrating the human body can cause damage to organs, from burns at the point of contact, nerve damage, heart damage leading to arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, and damage to all other organs. In addition to acute injuries, electrical accidents can leave long-term sequelae on the nervous system, heart, kidneys, musculoskeletal system, etc.," Dr. Kieu said.
To prevent similar accidents from happening to children, Dr. Kieu emphasized that parents should closely supervise their children, always keeping them within sight. When repairing electrical equipment at home, the power supply should be switched off or children should be kept away from it. In particular, electrical appliances should be kept in safe places, out of reach of children, and electrical outlets should be covered or fitted with covers to ensure the safety of children, especially those in their exploratory years.
