In an interview published on March 5, President Alexander Lukashenko said Belarus is ready to host a dialogue between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and US President Donald Trump, according to the Belta news agency.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko says he is ready to hold a peace conference in Ukraine.
"There's no need to be angry with Zelensky, regardless of what you think of him. The important thing is to reach an agreement with Zelensky because the majority of Ukrainian society supports him. Therefore, the important thing is to negotiate," Lukashenko said.
The Belarusian leader invited President Zelensky to Belarus for dialogue because "Kyiv is only 200 km from the Belarusian border and a half-hour flight away."
"Come here! We will sit here and reach an agreement in a calm, trouble-free atmosphere. So please tell Mr. Trump that I am waiting for him to come here to talk with Mr. Putin and Mr. Zelensky. We will negotiate calmly if they want to reach an agreement," the Belarusian president continued.
Lukashenko is a close ally of President Putin, and Belarus is under sanctions from the US and other Western countries for supporting Russia's military campaign in Ukraine.
In the interview, Lukashenko praised Trump's efforts to engage in dialogue with Russia and end the fighting in Ukraine. "Trump is a good man; he talks about it a lot and has done something to end the fighting in Ukraine and in the Middle East. It seems his only policy is to end the war. That's a great idea," President Lukashenko said.
The interview was recorded on February 27 but was released after Trump said he had received a message from Zelensky expressing his willingness for long-term peace talks with Russia.
The meeting between Zelensky and Trump at the White House last week was tense, marked by disagreements, and Trump reportedly ordered a halt to all military aid to Ukraine. President Zelensky later expressed regret over the incident and a desire to rectify the situation through renewed dialogue with the American leader.
