Travel + Leisure magazine has just announced the top 25 most amazing islands to travel to around the planet, with the Maldives ranking number 1 and Vietnam coming in at number 2.
Islands in the middle of the ocean always offer travelers unparalleled experiences and are often described as "a gateway to paradise." Pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters create a tranquil setting for relaxation and rejuvenation. However, the islands on this Travel + Leisure readers' list of the best also offer a wealth of exciting activities, from surfing and diving to attending regional festivals and exploring local cuisine . The top three winning islands this year include two well-known destinations: the Maldives (number 1) and Bali (number 3). But squeezing in second place is Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam.

With a score of 94.41, Phu Quoc was recognized by Travel + Leisure as "an emerging tourist destination – and that is its greatest strength. While some beaches in Southeast Asia have developed, Phu Quoc has maintained its tranquility." In addition, Phu Quoc has recently hosted diverse art performances, fireworks displays, a new night market in Sunset Town, and recently launched projects that have garnered attention, such as the Kiss Bridge. Greece, a country with over 6,000 islands, had four winning islands on the list: Milos (number 4), Crete (number 6), Corfu and the Ionian Islands (number 20), and Paros (number 24). Three Italian islands – Ischia at number 11, Sicily at number 17, and Sardinia at number 21 – made the list this year, and let's not forget Thailand, represented by Koh Samui at number 9 and Phuket at number 16. Southeast Asia also has Palawan Island in the Philippines (number 13). The Travel + LeisureWorld 's Best Awards 2024 survey saw over 186,000 readers complete the questionnaires. A total of over 700,000 votes were cast across more than 8,700 businesses including hotels, cities, and travel agencies. For the island ranking, criteria included: natural beaches; activities/attractions; restaurants/food; people/friendliness; and destination value. For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final score is the average of these answers.
