Vietnamese table tennis faces disarray ahead of SEA Games 33, with no head coach yet found.

With only two and a half months left until the 33rd SEA Games begin in Thailand, the Vietnamese table tennis team has yet to assemble and finalize its roster, causing many to worry about their goal of defending the gold medal.

The Vietnamese table tennis team is facing difficulties.

According to the original plan, the Vietnamese table tennis team, with 22 players, was scheduled to gather in early August to prepare for the 33rd SEA Games. Compared to other teams and also compared to previous SEA Games, the Vietnamese table tennis team's training schedule was considered late.

However, the Vietnamese table tennis team has not yet assembled. Yesterday, a leader of the Vietnam Table Tennis Federation stated that, after careful consideration and review of the team following the National Outstanding Players Tournament currently taking place in Phu Tho , the Vietnamese table tennis team will assemble in early October with a streamlined squad. The team will have a training camp in China in November before heading to Thailand for the 33rd SEA Games (taking place from December 9-20).

"The Vietnamese table tennis team should have assembled in May after the national championship. At that time, we could have selected outstanding players from the national tournament along with some promising talents. Then, we could have continued to assess the team through the tournament for top players to make additions and replacements, and entered the final preparation phase for the 33rd SEA Games. The current preparation schedule is not ideal," shared a former coach of the Vietnamese table tennis team.

Up to this point, the table tennis department and the Vietnam Table Tennis Federation have yet to select a head coach for the Vietnamese table tennis team at the 33rd SEA Games. The location for the team's training camp has also generated mixed opinions, initially in Ho Chi Minh City, then later in Hanoi .

Mr. Phan Anh Tuan, head of the Table Tennis Department of the Vietnam Sports Department, stated that the Vietnamese table tennis team's goal at the 33rd SEA Games is to defend their gold medal. Besides Singapore's dominance, table tennis at the SEA Games also faces fierce competition from countries like Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam. However, in four consecutive SEA Games – the 29th SEA Games (2017 in Malaysia), the 30th SEA Games (2019 in the Philippines), the 31st SEA Games (2022 in Vietnam), and the 32nd SEA Games (2023 in Cambodia) – the Vietnamese team has consistently won one gold medal out of seven events: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, mixed doubles, men's team, and women's team.

In the women's singles event, Nguyen Khoa Dieu Khanh remains a key player and is in stable form, having recently helped the Ho Chi Minh City team win the women's team championship at the Outstanding Tournament and aiming for a gold medal in the individual event. Last year, Dieu Khanh affirmed her talent with a gold medal in the women's singles at the Southeast Asian Championships. Since the beginning of this year, she has also been given the opportunity to compete in several international tournaments to hone her skills.

In the men's singles, Vietnamese table tennis places its hopes on Nguyen Anh Tu. This player has been given opportunities to compete internationally recently and is expected to help the Vietnamese men's table tennis team shine in December. Furthermore, Vietnamese table tennis has a knack for team events, having previously won the men's doubles and mixed doubles SEA Games championships. Dinh Anh Hoang and Tran Mai Ngoc are the reigning SEA Games mixed doubles champions and have been teaming up for some time, promising to maintain their position at this year's SEA Games. Other promising players include Nguyen Duc Tuan and Doan Ba Tuan Anh (men).

With a fairly high-quality squad, if properly prepared, Vietnamese table tennis has the potential to achieve good results at the 33rd SEA Games.
