The South Korean Presidential Security Service has confirmed that a garbage balloon released by North Korea landed near the Presidential Office in Seoul today, October 24th.
In a statement sent to AFP, South Korea's Presidential Security Service said that a balloon from North Korea exploded in mid-air and debris was found scattered around the South Korean presidential office early on the morning of October 24.
The South Korean Presidential Security Service added that a safety inspection confirmed the new balloons posed no danger or pollution.
A man picks up a propaganda leaflet, allegedly from North Korea, that reads: "If war breaks out, the chance of survival is zero. The only way for South Korea to survive is to not antagonize North Korea!" on a street near the South Korean presidential office in Seoul on October 24.
This is the second time the South Korean presidential office in the heavily guarded, no-fly zone of downtown Seoul has detected balloons released from North Korea, following the first incident in July, according to AFP.
The South Korean newspaper Chosun Daily reported that the balloon carried anti-Korean leaflets mocking South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and First Lady Kim Keon Hee. The South Korean military declined to confirm the information when questioned by AFP.
There is currently no information on Pyongyang's reaction to the balloon incident.
What does North Korea say about the accusations of sending soldiers to fight in Ukraine?
The incident occurred a few days after Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, once again accused South Koreans of dropping anti-government materials into North Korea, as well as accusing South Korea of deploying drones to the capital Pyongyang.
"Seoul will have to see for itself how dangerous their actions were and how terrible and catastrophic the consequences they brought upon themselves will be," Kim said.
North Korea has been releasing balloons carrying garbage into South Korea since May, saying the action is in retaliation for South Korean activists dropping anti-Pyongyang leaflets into the North.
