Fresh Nghi Xuan catfish is delicious and fetches a good price.

Early-season catfish are in high demand and fetch high prices, making fishermen in Nghi Xuan district ( Ha Tinh province ) very enthusiastic and actively engaged in fishing at sea.

Between 8 and 12 o'clock each day, the coastal area of ​​Nghi Xuan district becomes bustling with dozens of fishing boats lining up to dock. Fresh catches of scad fish are quickly transported ashore by fishermen, ready to be sold to traders.

Fisherman Trinh Van Hien from Yen Ngu village, Xuan Yen commune, shared: "This is the season for scad fish, and the weather is favorable, so the catch is good and the selling price is high. In just the last two days, my boat caught nearly 30 kg of scad fish, earning over 4 million VND."

To catch scad, fishermen set sail at 4 a.m. when the sea is calm; they use nets with a mesh size of 17-19 mm and fish 1-2 nautical miles from the shore.

" Because I fish near the shore, I make two trips a day, averaging 10kg of catfish, which I sell for 150-160 thousand dong/kg. After deducting expenses, I earn nearly 1 million dong, " said fisherman Nguyen Xuan Phong from Duong Phong village, Xuan Hai commune, excitedly.

According to local fishermen, the scad fish appeared later this year than last year due to the leap month of February. For more than a week now, the weather has been calm, so the scad fish have been abundant, making it favorable for fishing boats to go out to sea to catch them.

Traders were waiting on the shore to buy the catfish.

Freshly caught fish from the sea are delicious, so even though they are more expensive, they still attract customers.

It is known that the scad fishing season begins from the beginning of September of the lunar calendar this year until the end of January of the following year. At the beginning of the season, each fishing boat averages about 6-7 kg of fish per trip. Some lucky boats can even catch 15-20 kg, earning around 2 million VND after just a few hours at sea.

In recent years, people have become very fond of dishes made from catfish. Therefore, this type of sea fish has become a specialty sought after by restaurant and eatery owners.

During the scad fishing season, people in the coastal areas of Nghi Xuan actively switch to other fishing methods. Increased seasonal fishing, especially for high-value fish species, has contributed to socio- economic stability and increased income for local fishermen.
