Ca Mau establishes marine reserve to protect endemic species

The People's Committee of Ca Mau province has just decided to establish the Ca Mau Marine Protected Area, with a scope including the sea area around the island clusters of Hon Khoai, Hon Chuoi and Hon Da Bac, with a total area of ​​27,000 hectares.

Of which, the area of ​​functional zones is 18,000 hectares (strictly protected zone of 3,000 hectares, ecological restoration zone of more than 11,200 hectares and service - administrative zone of about 3,970 hectares) and buffer zone of 9,000 hectares.

The goal of this province is to protect and conserve aquatic resources, rare and endangered marine species of economic and scientific value; protect the environment and ecosystems, natural landscapes;...

Some endemic, rare, and migratory species are located in the reserve such as: Yellow-tailed lizard, cotton squirrel, Nicobar pigeon, white-bellied sea eagle, branch coral, table oyster, pearl oyster, shrimp, fish, etc.

"Conserving natural ecosystems, characteristics, biodiversity, and unique natural landscapes of island clusters to serve scientific research,education , ecotourism, adventure tourism, and resorts," the decision of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province clearly stated.

In the immediate future, the Provincial People's Committee assigned the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to preside over and coordinate with relevant units to organize the management of the Ca Mau Provincial Marine Protected Area according to regulations.

In the long term, when the marine reserve is qualified to meet the needs of service exploitation and is expected to have a self-balancing revenue source, the province will consider establishing a separate Management Board.
