Racing with reference questions for high school graduation 2025

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí30/10/2024

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - The 2025 high school graduation exam sample questions are modern and completely new compared to the old exam methods. Therefore, students and universities are "racing" to adapt.

Teachers and students are racing against each other.

According to Mr. Ta Tuan Phuong, a math teacher at Anhxtanh High School ( Hanoi ), the 2024 school year will be the first year that 12th-grade students take the high school graduation exam under the new curriculum.

According to the school, many students are very worried, especially after the Ministry of Education and Training released the sample exam questions with many changes.

"In our school, students have been familiar with similar sample exam formats to the one recently published by the Ministry for many years, but teachers still need to make further changes in their teaching and learning methods to suit the trend of innovation."

"Specifically for public schools, I believe there will have to be many changes in both examinations and teaching methods so that students can keep up with the new exam format," Mr. Phuong said.

According to this teacher, in addition to worrying about the new exam format, many students are also under added pressure to cope with separate exams.

In addition to school, many students have to attend several tutoring classes for various aptitude and thinking skills assessments from morning until late at night, sometimes starting at 5 am.

"Throughout the second semester, several students repeatedly requested leave to participate in separate entrance exams, disrupting their classroom learning. In particular, students from distant areas had to travel to major cities to take the exams, incurring significant financial costs."

To ensure that the completion of the high school program is not disrupted by separate exams, I believe that universities should only organize separate exams when students complete the 12th grade program, and each university should only organize two separate exams per year.

"Currently, there are too many separate exams with different names, causing confusion for students, while those who don't participate feel insecure and afraid of missing out on opportunities," Mr. Phuong said.

Does the separate entrance exam keep up with the new curriculum?

Sharing this view, Associate Professor Dr. Duong Ba Vu (Department of Chemistry, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education) argues that current university entrance exams should assess competencies based on the 2018 General Education Program (GEP).

The 2018 General Education Program described the criteria and indicators for each specific competency component. The questions in the sample exam assess students' responsiveness to these specific competency indicators.

The entrance exams of higher education institutions must also be aligned with the curriculum and students' competencies.

Therefore, these institutions need to publish the criteria and indicators of the competencies to be assessed, along with sample test questions that are appropriate for the stated purpose of competency assessment.

"I believe these are important grounds for the Ministry of Education and Training to fulfill its role of state management, for higher education institutions to implement a mechanism of self-responsibility and accountability, and for the people to exercise their right to supervision," Associate Professor Vu said.

Speaking to a reporter from Dan Tri newspaper , Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh (senior lecturer at Hanoi Pedagogical University, member of the 2018 general education curriculum development committee) stated that any educational process aims to create changes in learners according to educational goals.

The educational goals of the 2018 General Education Program, according to Resolution No. 29-TW-4/11/2013, focus on developing intellectual and physical abilities, forming civic qualities and competencies, discovering and nurturing talents, and providing career guidance for students.

To assess students' abilities, exam questions must evaluate the competency frameworks outlined in the 2018 General Education Curriculum.

The sample test papers recently published by the Ministry of Education and Training not only meet the requirements for assessing students' abilities according to the 2018 General Education Curriculum but also meet the requirements of Resolution No. 29-TW-4/11/2013, which means ensuring reliability, honesty, and accurate assessment of students' abilities, serving as a basis for admission to vocational and higher education.

Currently, in our country, there is only one general education program, the 2018 General Education Program. The requirements that students need to achieve are the requirements of the Party and the State regarding the formation and development of qualities and competencies for the younger generation.

To properly implement the legal regulations on general education, all forms of student assessment in general education must comply with the requirements of this education program.

The separate entrance examinations of higher education institutions must assess the competency requirements of students as stipulated in the 2018 General Education Curriculum.

According to the assessment of most teachers, the sample exam questions have a strong differentiating effect. This is an important basis for higher education institutions to trust and use for admission purposes in accordance with Resolution No. 29-TW-4/11/2013.

Thus, the teaching results of teachers can help students have the opportunity to pass university entrance exams without having to go through other exams. This will contribute to raising the status of teachers in education.
