According to The Verge , Niantic, the developer behind the popular Pokémon Go game, has announced a collaboration with Capcom to create a game based on the Monster Hunter franchise . The new game, titled Monster Hunter Now , will follow the traditional monster-hunting gameplay of the series, but its unique feature will be bringing the hunting experience into augmented reality (AR) technology in the real world – a specialty of Niantic.
Niantic is creating a real-world monster hunting game.
Specific details about the new game are still quite vague, with Niantic stating that more information will be available when the close beta launches in the near future, but it seems that Monster Hunter Now will follow the familiar formula of Monster Hunter. Specifically, creatures from space will invade the human world, and players can encounter them directly on the real-world map.
Players will hunt monsters and collect the necessary materials to craft and upgrade weapons and armor. Continuous combat is a core element of Monster Hunter games; however, Monster Hunter Now will only throw players into short battles lasting around 75 seconds, instead of the drawn-out, exhausting monster fights found in console games.
"We wanted to make the combat element simple and intuitive, but still challenging enough for players to experience and master," Sakae Osumi, a senior producer at Niantic in Tokyo, explained in a press conference.

Following the resounding success of Pokémon Go , Niantic partnered with several notable names for real-world games with projects like NBA All-World and Pikmin Bloom , and now-closed projects like Harry Potter: Wizards Unite . However, none of these games have been as successful as Pokémon, and last June Niantic shut down several development projects and laid off 8% of its staff.
This developer is also developing the virtual pet game Peridot, which is expected to launch in May.
Meanwhile, Monster Hunter remains a more popular game franchise than ever, with Monster Hunter: World from 2018 becoming Capcom's best-selling game ever.
