The life of an isolated driver on Lo Xo Pass: Collecting rainwater for daily activities

On the evening of October 28, SGGP reporters approached and talked over the phone with Ms. Bui Nhat Le (from Hung Yen), who is isolated on Lo Xo Pass, to hear about the lives of drivers during the days of isolation on the pass.

Traffic police crossed the landslide site to supply food to the trapped driver.

At around 8:30 a.m. on October 26, when Ms. Le and her husband were driving a truck carrying ceramics on Lo Xo Pass (from Quang Ngai to Da Nang ), when they reached the Dak Mon Bridge area, a heavy landslide suddenly occurred, making it impossible for the vehicle to move. In addition to her vehicle, about 19 other vehicles were stuck, lined up on the pass.

At that time, there were only a few bottles of water left in the car, no food and no phone signal. The drivers could only sit and wait, asking each other for information about the landslide and the expected time of traffic resumption. At about 5 pm that same day, while they were worried about the lack of food, the rescue team brought instant noodles and water to supply the family and others in the same situation. Upon receiving the food, the couple cried tears of joy, saying that it was one of the best packages of noodles they had ever eaten.

The next morning, when the car had backed up a bit towards Quang Ngai , the couple was able to get a phone signal to call home to inform their family that they were safe. On October 27, the rescue team delivered rice, water, and food twice. By October 28, the amount of food was brought up more regularly, so the drivers did not have to worry about food shortages.

Stuck on the pass for three days, it rained heavily, all activities took place on the bus. The drivers supported each other, sharing phone chargers and water bottles. She and her husband, along with many others, collected rainwater for use. At night, the family slept in the cabin, and when they opened the door for ventilation, the wind and rain blew in, making it cold.

Instant noodles supplied by the rescue team were called by Ms. Le as one of the best instant noodle packages she had ever eaten.

“It is only in times of trouble that we see the warmth of human love. Inside the isolated area, we help each other, sharing our belongings little by little to survive together; outside, the rescue team continuously delivers supplies. That warms our hearts, gives us more motivation to overcome difficulties and only hopes that the pass will soon be cleared so we can return to our families,” Ms. Le said emotionally.
