Singer Phuong Giao still maintains a youthful appearance and a strong voice at the age of 64.
Famous singer Hung Cuong doesn't want his children to follow in his footsteps.
Singer Phuong Giao, born in 1961, is the daughter of renowned singer Hung Cuong, considered an icon of 20th-century Vietnamese music. He was not only successful in the field of Cai Luong (traditional Vietnamese opera) but also left a significant mark in the upbeat music genre. Following in her father's footsteps, Phuong Giao chose singing and became famous for her energetic pop songs, especially her covers of foreign songs, earning her the title of "Queen of Upbeat Music."
In a conversation with Thuy Nga on the show " Home with Guests ," singer Phuong Giao revealed that she wasn't passionate about singing as a child because the renowned singer Hung Cuong had warned his daughter, "Don't pursue this profession because it's very thankless." The singer explained, "My father said that when you're at the peak, the audience considers you an idol. But one day, if you decline, the audience will quickly forget you. Because they only pay attention to those at the top, not everyone, but the majority. So my father said this profession is very thankless, you should study hard and not follow in his footsteps. But it seems that fate chose me, the profession chose me, I couldn't choose the profession. I entered the singing profession at the age of 17."
Thúy Nga was surprised when singer Phương Giao revealed that she had only been living in the US for 20 months.
The daughter of artist Hung Cuong shared that she initially pursued a career to improve her family's financial situation . However, over time, she gradually developed a deep passion for art. Phuong Giao believes that pursuing art is like "a path being laid out for you, not something you choose." The singer recounted that in the beginning, she only sang in a group, but fortunately, her attractive appearance led to her being chosen as a program presenter. Later, Phuong Giao left the group and switched to solo singing, beginning to build her career.
Throughout her nearly 50-year career, Phuong Giao once put her singing career on hold to focus on her family. The singer confided that after getting married, her husband's family didn't want her to continue singing, but out of love for her husband, she accepted. However, when her family faced difficulties, and she had no other profession besides singing, she returned to the arts.
During her peak years, Phuong Giao recounted that she used to perform at nearly 10 venues in a single night. The singer said she wasn't picky; as long as there was a show and she could arrange her time, she would accept the offer. She confided that at that time, she was constantly performing to provide a more comfortable life for her family. The 60s-era singer said: "One night, I counted and realized I sang 52 songs, at both nightclubs and other venues. I sang so much that my voice became thick like a man's, and I couldn't record in the morning; I had to do it from 12 AM onwards. I'm lucky to have kept my voice normal, but now it's even thicker than before."
The singer opened up about having suffered three serious accidents, nearly preventing her from performing on stage again.
After three accidents, the family went bankrupt.
Throughout her singing career, Phuong Giao revealed that she has gone through many hardships, including three horrific accidents. She recalled: "That day I was going to a show, but I was alone. For some reason, I had a premonition that something bad would happen, so I left earlier than usual. Even though I was walking very slowly, I collided with a drunk person. At the time, I was wearing leather shoes, but three of my toes were severed, and my left foot was completely crushed. Luckily, I was wearing socks that day, so the severed parts were inside the socks and didn't fall onto the road. People around me rushed me to the hospital for emergency treatment. At that time, the doctor – Phương Hồng Quế's husband – did everything he could to reattach my three toes. For three months, I couldn't sing; I would cry whenever I listened to music programs at home. Now I can only move two toes; the tendons in the others are completely severed. On two other occasions, I also had accidents and had to be hospitalized in the orthopedic trauma department. Fortunately for me, I met a good doctor; he respected singers and tried his best to restore me to my original condition."
Besides her career, Phuong Giao also shared about her married life with its many ups and downs. The singer said that she and her husband met and became husband and wife by fate. Phuong Giao recounted that her husband was once very wealthy, owning several hundred gold bars. However, after 3 years of marriage, the family unfortunately suffered a financial crisis and went bankrupt. At that time, her husband also fell seriously ill, leaving the family destitute.
Phuong Giao shared that she is fortunate to have a happy marriage and stable children.
"At that time, my family was going through a difficult period, and my husband was also ill, so I was forced to find a way to return to singing. I accepted starting over because the audience no longer knew who I was. There were days when I would wait from the beginning to the end of the show but still couldn't get a chance to sing. Fortunately, the performing arts deities took pity on me, and I gradually got more shows and was able to provide for my family. My husband also recovered from his illness and returned to work. I think we've gotten through the difficult times, because honestly, I don't understand how we endured that period of shared hardship," the female singer confided.
At over 60 years old, Phuong Giao decided to move to the United States to live with her daughter. The singer revealed that she has been settled there for about 20 months, gradually adapting to life in the US. Occasionally, Phuong Giao performs to maintain the passion that has followed her for nearly 50 years.
