On January 26th, the Da Nang City People's Committee, in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Training, organized the 13th Southeast Asian School Sports Delegation Heads Conference. Attending the conference were Ms. Ngo Thi Minh, Deputy Minister of Education and Training; Mr. Tran Chi Cuong, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang City People's Committee; and representatives from the delegations of 11 countries.
Delegates held their first meeting to hear a report from the host team, Vietnam, and agreed on many points in preparation for the congress in June. The conference lasted until January 27th.
The 13th Southeast Asian School Sports Delegation Heads Conference was held in Da Nang City.
In her opening remarks at the congress, Ms. Ngo Thi Minh, Deputy Minister of Education and Training, extended greetings to the student sports delegations from Southeast Asian countries. According to Deputy Minister Ngo Thi Minh, the Covid-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the economic , educational, and sports sectors worldwide over the past three years, including Vietnam.
Specifically in the field of sports, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many major regional, continental, and world sporting events have had to be postponed. This includes the 13th Southeast Asian School Games, initially scheduled to be held in Vietnam in 2022 but postponed to 2024.
Ms. Ngo Thi Minh, Deputy Minister of Education and Training, delivered the opening remarks at the conference.
According to Ms. Minh, physical education and sports play a very important role in social life and improve public health, especially for the younger generation. Vietnam is honored to host the 13th Southeast Asian School Games in 2024. This is the second time Vietnam has hosted one of the important sports and educational events in Southeast Asia for students.
"Hosting this sporting event is a stepping stone to promote solidarity and friendship among the younger generation of Southeast Asian countries through sports competitions for students. As the host country, the Ministry of Education and Training, the Organizing Committee, and the Vietnam Student Sports Association have closely coordinated with other ministries and agencies, along with the Da Nang City People's Committee, to prepare for and strive to successfully organize the 13th Southeast Asian Student Games," Deputy Minister Ngo Thi Minh said.
"We hope that the heads of delegations from participating countries and the Southeast Asian School Sports Council will uphold their sense of responsibility and actively exchange and agree with Vietnam on a number of issues related to preparation to contribute to organizing a successful Games," Deputy Minister Ngo Thi Minh emphasized.
According to the Organizing Committee, the 13th Southeast Asian School Games will be held in Da Nang City from June 1-9, with the participation of sports delegations from 11 countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, and East Timor. Athletes will compete in 6 sports: swimming, basketball, badminton, athletics, pencak silat, and vovinam.
Mr. Tran Chi Cuong, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang City People's Committee, delivered a speech at the conference.
Mr. Tran Chi Cuong, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang City People's Committee, said that Da Nang is one of Vietnam's leading cultural, tourism, and sports centers, so the city is very honored to be chosen as the host of the 13th Southeast Asian School Games.
"Da Nang has been, is, and will continue to make every effort to prepare all necessary conditions, from infrastructure to competition venues, to best serve the Games. Today's Heads of Delegation Conference is not only to survey the venues for competitions and accommodation for the Games, but also an opportunity for the heads of delegations, officials of the Sports Council, and the host country, Vietnam, to discuss and share ideas to ensure the Games' success," Mr. Cuong emphasized.
In Da Nang City, the venues selected for the competition include Tien Son Sports Complex, Son Tra District Cultural and Sports Center, Military Region 5 Gymnasium, Hoa Xuan Athletics Stadium, Taekwondo Arena, and the city's swimming and diving pool… All are ready to serve the competition and meet the requirements.
Mr. Cuong believes that Da Nang City is a suitable place to host sporting events, and also a regional and international destination for tourism and cultural experiences.
"We hope the 13th Southeast Asian School Games will be a memorable event showcasing the youthful energy and spirit that contributes to promoting solidarity and friendship among countries in the region, connecting and shining together," Mr. Cuong added.
