On June 22nd, Hanoi University of Science and Technology held interviews for candidates applying to the university under the talent-based admissions program. Each candidate was interviewed by three professors from the panel.

Nguyen Trung Hieu, a student in the specialized Computer Science class at the High School for Gifted Students specializing in Natural Sciences, said that his interview lasted about 20 minutes, starting between 8 and 9 am.

After introducing himself and his chosen field of study, Mechatronics, Hieu shared more about his high school studies, outstanding achievements, and future plans. What surprised the male student was that instead of having to "talk for the entire session," he felt "close and without distance with the teachers."

“The professors even shared in-depth information about Mechatronics so that I could truly understand it, analyzed it, and suggested other related fields for me to consider. I also proactively asked many more questions about the field. At first, I was a little nervous, but then I felt comfortable because the interview felt more like a conversation,” Hieu said.

Also participating in this morning's interview, Hoang Minh Quang, from Yen Lap High School ( Phu Tho province ), said that since last month, he had been consulting online groups for talented students taking the entrance exam to learn from their experiences and prepare his answers. The male student previously won second prize in the provincial-level Biology competition for gifted students and achieved excellent academic results throughout his three years of high school.

“During the interview, the professors asked me to introduce myself, explain my reasons for choosing Chemical Engineering, my family background and financial situation. They also asked what I would study if I didn't get accepted into this program? What are my plans for studying at the Polytechnic University, and what is my study schedule?”

Quang said that these questions were not tricky. He had previously participated in class presentations and clubs regularly, so he was able to answer confidently.

This year, Hanoi University of Science and Technology received approximately 5,000 applications for the talent-based admissions program. Photo: Duy Thanh

Associate Professor Vu Duy Hai, Head of the Admissions and Career Guidance Board at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that this year the university received approximately 5,000 applications for talent-based admissions. Of these, 400 students won national or international awards (eligible for direct admission according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training); 1,600 candidates were admitted based on international certificates such as SAT, ACT, A-Level, AP, or IB; and about 3,000 students applied for admission based on their academic profile combined with an interview.

The number of candidates with national and international awards and international certificates has nearly doubled compared to last year. According to Mr. Hai, this sharp increase in the number of candidates with international certificates is due to the growing number of students taking these exams. Additionally, the recent restrictions on international student admissions in some countries, such as the US, may also be a reason for the increased number of students applying to Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Regarding candidates applying for a combination of application review and interview, Mr. Hai stated that the school had previously announced the evaluation framework, primarily focusing on presentation skills, social awareness, and other knowledge outside of the school, avoiding overly challenging questions. Additionally, candidates may present their understanding of the field, the school, and their personal passions to persuade the judging panel.

"According to annual data, most candidates have good presentation skills. Only a small number of candidates are shy about communicating, so they get nervous and can't speak in front of the teachers," Mr. Hai said.

Unlike previous years, when interview scores were used for admission to Hanoi University of Science and Technology, this year this part is only a condition. Candidates with interview scores below 10/20 will be assessed as Failing and will not be eligible for talent-based admission.
