There are currently 158 traders nationwide engaged in rice export business.

Previously, according to the list as of October 8, 2024, the whole country had 157 rice export traders. Thus, according to the latest list, the number of rice export traders has increased by 1 enterprise.

Regarding rice export activities, according to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the estimated volume and value of rice exports in January 2025 reached 500,000 tons and 308 million USD, an increase of 1% in volume but a decrease of 10.4% in value compared to the same period in 2024.

Notably, current rice prices are significantly lower than in 2024. According to the Vietnam Food Association, the latest export rice price update shows that on February 6th, 5% broken rice stood at US$399/ton, down US$5/ton from the previous day; 25% broken rice stood at US$371/ton, down US$6/ton from the previous day; and 100% broken rice stood at US$313/ton, down US$5/ton from the previous day.

At the Ministry of Industry and Trade's regular press conference for the fourth quarter of 2024 and a meeting with media agencies on the occasion of the New Year 2025 on January 7, 2025, Mr. Tran Thanh Hai - Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department - informed that in 2024, Vietnam achieved a record in rice exports. For the whole year, Vietnam exported 9.18 million tons, with a value of 5.75 billion USD, the highest figure ever. Rice exports achieved a growth of 12% in volume and 23% in value.

Recently, Mr. Tran Thanh Hai said, Vietnamese enterprises have focused on improving rice quality and building a good rice brand, thereby finding traditional markets such as Indonesia, Philippines...

In terms of unit price, in 2024 Vietnam achieved an average export unit price of 627 USD/ton (previously below 600 USD/ton), an increase of 9% compared to last year.

However, currently, due to India lifting its rice export restrictions, the abundant supply of Indian rice is putting pressure on the market, causing rice prices to trend downwards. The average export price of rice, previously as high as $623 per ton, is now only $441 per ton. This price drop is due to India reopening rice exports, along with the fact that some countries have become partially self-sufficient in food.

At this stage, Mr. Tran Thanh Hai said that rice exporting enterprises need capital support from banks. In addition, the Ministry of Finance also needs to refund export tax early to create favorable conditions for rice exporting enterprises.

In its role as a state management agency, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will intensify the implementation of solutions to promote rice exports in the coming period.

In early 2025, the Ministry of Industry and Trade drafted and submitted to the Government Decree No. 01/2025/ND-CP dated January 1, 2025, amending Decree 107/2018/ND-CP on rice export business. The Decree is expected to help rice export activities improve.

Shortly thereafter, the Ministry of Industry and Trade issued a draft Circular amending and supplementing several articles of Circular No. 30/2018/TT-BCT dated October 1, 2018, issued by the Minister of Industry and Trade, detailing several articles of Government Decree No. 107/2018/NĐ-CP dated August 15, 2018, on rice export business, to solicit feedback from agencies, organizations, and individuals.
