Signs of prolonged anemia need to be alert

(Dan Tri) - Dizziness, lightheadedness, and prolonged fatigue are not simply due to lack of sleep or stress. These can be early signs of cerebral anemia, a condition that carries many potential health risks.

Dizziness, lightheadedness, and prolonged fatigue can be signs of cerebral anemia. This is a condition that poses many health risks if not detected and treated early.

Ms. NGN (23 years old, living in Phu Nhuan district, Ho Chi Minh City) has experienced unpleasant symptoms of cerebral anemia since she was in middle school.

"I often feel dizzy, whether I'm standing, sitting or lying down. Sometimes my vision suddenly blurs, and I almost fall when sitting on a chair or even when driving on the street," N. shared.

Diagnosed with cerebral anemia early on, N. did not use any medication but only took some functional foods to support brain health. Although the symptoms kept recurring, she rarely went back to the doctor because she thought the condition was not too serious.

Easily confused signs warning of cerebral anemia

According to Dr. Le Nhat Duy, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Branch 3, cerebral anemia is a condition in which blood flow to the brain is not enough to provide oxygen and nutrients necessary for brain cells to function.

This condition is increasingly common in young people, especially those who work at high intensity, are sedentary and are often stressed.

Dr. Duy emphasized that cerebral ischemia, especially transient ischemic attack (TIA), is a dangerous warning sign.

"TIA occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is temporarily blocked, usually by a blood clot. Symptoms can disappear quickly, making the patient subjective, but this is an early sign of 12% of stroke cases," Dr. Duy warned.

Statistics show that approximately 9-17% of patients who experience a TIA are at risk of stroke within 90 days, and 12% of stroke cases with a history of TIA die within one year.

To prevent and detect cerebral anemia early, Dr. Duy recommends that people pay attention to common symptoms of cerebral anemia such as dull or intermittent headaches (especially in the forehead or nape), dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling lightheaded, loss of balance, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, short-term memory loss, drowsiness, sleep disorders (difficulty falling asleep, light sleep, waking up in the middle of the night).

In addition, people should also note that symptoms of TIA include loss of body sensation (sudden weakness, paralysis or numbness on one or both sides of the body), language disorders (difficulty speaking, slurred speech, unclear words), visual disorders (blurred vision, double vision or loss of vision in one or both eyes).

"These symptoms can be fleeting and easily confused with common illnesses, but if they recur, the patient needs to see a doctor immediately for timely diagnosis and treatment," Dr. Duy noted.

If prolonged cerebral anemia is not treated, the patient may experience some health risks such as increased risk of stroke, premature brain aging, increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases, migraines, anxiety disorders, and depression.

Symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, and insomnia affect work, study, and daily activities, reducing quality of life.

In addition, prolonged anemia in the elderly also increases the risk of stroke, vascular dementia, vascular Parkinson's disease, increases the risk of falls, and worsens underlying diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.

To avoid the above risks, Dr. Duy recommends that everyone should have annual health check-ups, especially when there are recurring abnormal symptoms.

In addition, people need to increase physical activity, reduce stress, get enough sleep, maintain a healthy diet, limit fat and salt, and not take medication or supplements on their own. In addition, people need to monitor their cardiovascular health, control blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol to reduce the risk of blood vessel blockage.

"Cerebral anemia is not only a common health problem but also a warning bell about the risk of stroke and other serious diseases. Early detection and treatment will help improve quality of life and minimize risks," emphasized Dr. Le Nhat Duy.
