De Gea and the unforgettable days at Fiorentina

Fiorentina, one of the most traditional clubs in Italian football, is going through the worst run of form in its modern history.

The pressure on Fiorentina is huge after a turbulent start to the season.

The 0-2 loss to Atalanta in round 13 of Serie A pushed Fiorentina deeper into crisis. Goalkeeper David De Gea's team has yet to taste victory in Serie A since the beginning of the season, earning only 6 points with a goal difference of -11.

Their poor performance has left them second to last in the standings, level on points with last-placed Verona but with a better goal difference. The 13-round winless streak in the opening round of Serie A 2025/26 is also an unprecedented record for "La Viola" in the history of the tournament.

Fiorentina have been in Serie A since their promotion back in 2004, after a brief spell in Serie B due to financial problems and the Calciopoli scandal. Before that, they had spent just six seasons outside of Italy's top flight since 1929.

The Florence club may not be in the top of the Serie A race, but they have a rich tradition and a lot of talent. Two Serie A titles (1955/56 and 1968/69), 6 Coppa Italia titles, and legendary stars like Gabriel Batistuta and Rui Costa have made Fiorentina an interesting icon in the land of pasta.

However, this season is threatening to ruin everything. After 13 rounds, Fiorentina have not won a single game, with 6 draws and 7 defeats. Worryingly, Serie A history is not on Fiorentina’s side. No club in the past has gone 13 opening games without a win and still managed to stay in the league.

De Gea anh 1

De Gea had high expectations when he signed with Fiorentina.

For Fiorentina, this is not only the worst run of form in the club's history (worse than the 1935/36 or 1977/78 seasons), but also three consecutive defeats at home at the Artemio Franchi, something that has not happened since the 1928/29 season.

"We have to adjust our mentality to fight for relegation," coach Vanoli admitted after the loss to Atalanta. The most worrying thing for Fiorentina is not only the winless streak, but also the deadlock in attack. They finish ineffectively and often make mistakes at key moments.

In defense, De Gea has not maintained his impressive form from the 2024/25 season. The former MU goalkeeper has only kept 5 clean sheets since the beginning of the season. Fiorentina's defense has conceded 21 goals after 13 rounds, the second worst record in the league, only better than Torino (23 goals conceded).

In May, De Gea decided to extend his contract with Fiorentina until 2028. After a forgettable period at the end of his career at MU, and having to endure many doubts due to being unemployed for a while, De Gea seemed to have regained his glory in the city of Florence.

In the early stages of his Serie A career, De Gea had a performance that amazed both Italian and European football. “Superman”, “The new David of Florence” or “The Alien” were the beautiful words that the Italian media used to give to the Spanish goalkeeper.

However, those good things are now in the past. If Fiorentina are relegated this season, it will be a disaster scenario for the former MU star in the twilight of his career.
