Textiles seize opportunities from niche markets

Việt NamViệt Nam01/11/2024

In addition to traditional products, Vietnamese textile and garment enterprises have been researching and producing new products such as: Fire-resistant clothing, labor protection, products serving the medical sector in disease prevention, etc. to meet market demand. This is considered a suitable direction, helping enterprises improve their competitiveness, expand the market, and promote growth.

Seven months after the Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex) and Coats Group (UK) signed a strategic cooperation agreement in the production of fire-resistant fabrics and clothing, the first orders have been produced and supplied to the market.

Breakthrough move

According to Vinatex CEO Pham Xuan Trinh, in Coats Group's development strategy, fire-resistant fabrics are one of the key products in the next 5 years. Therefore, the partner has made careful preparations for product research and development as well as taking advantage of business advantages and production experience of this product that has been applied in Mexico and India.

For Vinatex, throughout the past time, the unit has focused on developing based on the foundation and strengths of the supply chain from fiber, weaving, dyeing, and sewing to meet the needs of all customers globally.

The preparation process for the production of fire-resistant fabrics includes many principles and regulations that need to be followed such as market, human resources, factory and technology. Up to now, the unit has received information, received technology transfer, made samples,... and the products made all meet technical requirements and are highly appreciated by partners.

“In addition to advantages, businesses also face many difficulties because fireproofing products are special products, so the chemicals used are different from normal chemicals. Some chemical product brands need 1 to 2 months to order and transport to Vietnam, even by plane. All chemical suppliers, dyes,... must meet the strict requirements of their partners before businesses can sign contracts to put them into production,” Mr. Pham Xuan Trinh affirmed.

Being selected as the manufacturer of a new product line will help businesses have the opportunity to develop in all aspects from production platform to long-term business efficiency, while also helping businesses promote their supply chain and have complete products with their own brand.

According to the assessment of Vinatex Chairman of the Board of Directors Le Tien Truong, the cooperation with Coats Group to produce fire-resistant fabrics and clothing is a breakthrough step, helping the enterprise to elevate its brand, because the product has high technical requirements, legality, copyright, not ordinary fashion items. Notably, the product must strictly comply with the standards and evaluation regulations in the importing country.

The company is currently urgently producing to export the first orders of fire-resistant fabrics to Indonesia, India, the Middle East, and the US. “With this product, the company aims to achieve revenue of 2-2.5 million USD this year and in the first 5 years. The target is that each year, this product can double in size and meet the requirements of markets, especially the US, because this is a very important market for the world's textile industry. Progress in this market will create favorable conditions in other markets such as the EU, Japan, Korea, etc.,” Mr. Le Tien Truong emphasized.

Inevitable trend

In recent years, textile and garment enterprises have continuously invested, researched, and introduced new product lines to the market to maintain growth and help businesses overcome difficulties. For example, Garment Corporation 10 has invested in a series of modern equipment and machinery, and regularly organized training courses to improve the skills of workers. Thereby, the unit is ready to receive specialized, difficult, and complicated orders that require short production times and fast delivery.

Or the cooperation between Phong Phu Joint Stock Corporation and Advance Denim Company Limited, from 2019 to present, specializing in the production of denim fabric (firmly woven fabric, made of 100% cotton). Up to now, Phong Phu has become one of the leading enterprises in denim fabric production in Vietnam. In addition to the classic 100% cotton lines, Phong Phu has developed hundreds of new jeans models, with cotton, tencel, spandex, and viscose fibers to meet the fashion needs of the market.

According to experts, expanding the market and seizing opportunities in niche markets is an inevitable direction, helping businesses maintain production and promote growth. In particular, businesses often choose difficult, specific and potential orders and products such as fireproof fabrics, which will also face many challenges.

Because these products require large capital for technology investment, at the same time, businesses also need to have strategies and determination as well as strong human resources. Although the difficulties are still great, many businesses are still willing to invest in infrastructure, human resources, and technology to aim for sustainable development.

Chairman of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (Vitas) Vu Duc Giang said that proactively seeking new customers, especially in niche markets, is considered the key to helping businesses maintain stability during the current difficult period. For example, the Middle East market has a very fast growth rate, and consumers in this region are willing to pay high prices to buy good quality products.

However, this region has cultural diversity, requiring businesses to invest, research, understand culture, consumer habits and business environment to offer suitable products. Next, new, potential markets such as Russia, Canada, China, ... also need to be invested and researched by businesses to offer suitable product lines to meet consumer needs.

“In addition to export products, Vinatex and Coats also expect to bring products made in Vietnam to customers who are currently importing fire-resistant fabrics from abroad, moving towards domestic supply, replacing brands currently supplying FOB production in Vietnam for some specific industries.

Along with that, the two sides focus on building a communication program on fabric quality levels according to the strategic product types produced by Vinatex, depending on the needs of each customer," emphasized Vinatex CEO Pham Xuan Trinh.
