Hai Van Pass is located at the summit of Hai Van Pass, at an altitude of 490m above sea level, within the administrative boundaries of Lang Co town, Phu Loc district of Thua Thien Hue province and Hoa Hiep Bac ward, Lien Chieu district of Da Nang city.
Hai Van Pass was built during the Tran Dynasty and was restored in 1826 during the reign of Emperor Minh Mang of the Nguyen Dynasty.
The gate facing Thừa Thiên province bears the inscription "Hải Vân Quan," while the gate overlooking Quảng Nam province reads "Thiên hạ đệ nhất hùng quan" (The most magnificent pass in the world).
The Hai Van Pass historical site is a military fortress located at the summit of the Hai Van Pass, comprising numerous structures including a system of ramparts, warehouses, headquarters, and cannon fortifications.
During the Nguyen Dynasty, Hai Van Pass was a crucial gateway, serving as the southern entrance to the capital city of Hue. Therefore, the Nguyen Dynasty concentrated a large force and weapons at Hai Van Pass to defend it.
In 2017, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism decided to classify Hai Van Pass as a national historical site. This structure holds many cultural and historical values and is also a famous scenic spot, contributing to the tourism development of Thua Thien Hue province and Da Nang city.
