How many times a day is healthy to pee?

Going to the bathroom frequently is normal, especially if you drink plenty of water. However, experts say that for older adults, there is an ideal number that indicates good urinary health.

How often you urinate depends on many factors, including your fluid intake, as well as lifestyle factors and overall health.

According to urologist Hamid Abboud at New Victoria Hospital (UK), the normal urination frequency of healthy adults is 6-9 times per day, according to the health news site Verywell Health.

Less than 6 times or more than 9 times may be an abnormal signal that needs to be monitored. Although in some cases, 4 - 10 times may still be normal.

More than 10 times a day could be a sign of underlying health problems, including urinary tract infections, diabetes, or even bladder cancer, warns Dr. Abboud.

For people under 60 years old

Dr. Abboud said: Urinary habits change with age. For people under 60, urinating 5-8 times during the day and once at night is completely normal, but if it exceeds this number, it may be a sign of pathology.

He added that while increased urinary frequency in teenagers, due to hormonal imbalances caused by puberty, is usually "nothing to worry about", if the condition persists into adulthood, it could indicate urinary tract infections, diabetes and, rarely, bladder cancer.

Urinary tract infections - if left untreated, can become chronic, increasing the risk of kidney failure, blood infections and bladder cancer.

Bladder cancer, commonly found in people over 60 years old, has the main symptoms of blood in the urine, accompanied by pain when urinating, frequent urination, abdominal pain and loss of appetite.

As you age, your bladder muscles weaken, leading to urinary incontinence and urgency. It can also be caused by urinary tract infections, Parkinson's disease, or not drinking enough water.

For people over 60 years old

As men age, the prostate gland increases in size, putting pressure on the bladder and possibly increasing the frequency of urination, Dr. Abboudi added.

Older patients are also more likely to be taking diuretic medications, which can also cause more frequent urination.

For people over 60 years old, urinating 10 times a day is considered normal, but if it exceeds this level or is accompanied by unusual symptoms, you should see a urologist for early diagnosis and timely treatment.
