A recent incident on an American Airlines flight has led to an investigation into whether a hidden camera was found inside the bathroom of one of the airline's planes. US police and the FBI are calling the situation "potentially criminal."

The incident occurred last Saturday, September 2, on American Airlines domestic flight AA-1441, from the airline’s hub at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in North Carolina to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). According to a report by the Independent, the incident involved a teenage female passenger, a phone, and a flight attendant.

The female passenger reportedly wanted to use the toilet on the plane but was stopped by a male flight attendant who told her to wash her hands. The passenger then used the toilet. It is reported that the passenger's mother warned other passengers not to use the same toilet due to a hidden camera inside.

Upon landing in Boston, Massachusetts State Police boarded the plane and escorted the suspected male flight attendant, after which airline staff inspected the restroom. Since this was a domestic flight and the incident occurred in US airspace, local authorities will be responsible for the investigation.

Simple Flying reached out to American Airlines and received the following statement from the airline: "American Airlines Flight 1441 from Charlotte (CLT) to Boston (BOS) is under investigation by law enforcement. We take this matter very seriously and are fully cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation, as safety and security are our highest priorities."

While it is not permitted to install cameras in aircraft lavatories under any circumstances, it should be noted that, for general surveillance of cabins, CCTV cameras can often be found on aircraft.

They are often used to monitor the cabin and certain sensitive areas, such as the cockpit entrance, and are used to ensure passenger and flight safety. Additionally, on larger aircraft, cabin cameras can allow the crew to monitor areas that are out of their line of sight.

It was previously reported that some airlines had cameras built into their screens to monitor individual passengers, but this has been proven false, as airlines confirmed the cameras have never been and will never be activated.

It should also be noted that some large aircraft may have various cameras installed on the outside of the aircraft, depending on the airline. However, this is used for the sole purpose of making it easier and safer to fly these large aircraft.
