The World Youth Stage has just released the emotional work 'Doi Nhu Y' (author Bui Quoc Bao).

Although it was a test by student Vo Thi Trang Nha, graduated from the Faculty of Directing, University of Theatre and Cinema, Ho Chi Minh City, the play "Doi Nhu Y" conquered the audience with its meticulousness, depth and artistic quality - which can be said to be not inferior to professional works that are selling tickets.

Adapted from the short story of the same name by writer Nguyen Ngoc Tu, Life as you wish has been familiar to many audiences through different versions. However, the stage always has its own appeal, each version brings a new color, a new breath. Trang Nha's version is both faithful to the endless tragedy of the river region, and breathes into it a youthful, fresh and kind spirit.

The story revolves around the cruel fate of Hai Doi (Hoa Hiep), a gentle blind man. Out of compassion, he takes care of a mentally handicapped girl named Ba (Thanh Be), only to suffer the injustice of being the author of the unfortunate fetus. Tragedy forces Hai Doi to give up his unfinished first love, taking Ba with him to wander around riverbanks and markets selling lottery tickets to make a living. In the midst of a miserable life, they rely on each other, their love blossoms into a small but warm family. The two children are born one after another, and he names them Nhu and Y, encapsulating his simple dream of a complete life.

Just when happiness seemed to be smiling, storms came when Hai Doi discovered he had lung cancer. At the same time, the biological father of the two children suddenly appeared. He, a violent man, only wanted to take back his son, little Y, and abandoned little Nhu. Faced with the harsh truth and the little time left, Hai Doi had to make a painful choice: let little Y follow his biological father in the hope that his child would have a prosperous future and receive a proper education. The pain of the poor father was like a thousand knives stabbing into the heart, drawing tears from the audience.

Contributing greatly to the weight of the story is the consistent and passionate acting of the professional cast, the very young faces of the stage. Hoa Hiep has breathed new life into the character Hai Doi. Less experienced in the elements, his Hai Doi is somewhat more optimistic and resourceful, knows how to climb trees to pick coconuts, knows how to row a boat. He gracefully shows his lovely features when taking care of his wife and children, and is still full of kindness when sacrificing for others. The tragic scenes are still handled by Hoa Hiep with emotion, touching the hearts of viewers.

A special compliment must be given to Thanh Be in the role of Ba. She portrayed a mentally handicapped girl with great authenticity, from her rolling eyes, her broken voice, to her erratic movements. Sometimes naive to the point of being scary, sometimes sober and cunning, Thanh Be showed serious investment, observation and research to fully live the character.

Doi Nhu Y deserves another chance to reach the public.

The success of the play cannot be denied to the vision of director Vo Thi Trang Nha. Her production remains faithful to the original script, without losing the tragic quality and adding a fresh, youthful touch. Trang Nha has meticulously taken care of everything from music , costumes to scenery, vividly recreating the river space of the West. From the poor, tattered boat, the coconut trees reflecting in the water, the ferry, the rural market... everything appears rustic yet poetic. The lighting and stage design are arranged aesthetically, creating beautiful and emotional mise-en-scène.

Tragedy and comedy are interwoven reasonably. The comedy is rustic, not overusing the body to the point of being offensive, especially impressive is the charm of the character of Ms. Tam (Le Trang) - a chivalrous, loyal woman very "Western". Other actors such as Ly Kieu Hanh, Bui Cong Danh, Nhu Y, Thanh Thuan, Puti Yeu Dau, Thanh Nhan, Dinh Phu Ho, Ngoc Anh... all played their roles well, full of enthusiasm.

The curtain has closed on the story of Doi N nhu Y , but the emotions still linger. High-quality and passionate graduation works like this deserve more opportunities to reach the public, instead of just being performed for one night and then quietly stored away. That is a huge waste for both the artist and the audience.
