On July 10th, Duc Tuan - The Divo's Facebook page posted a series of photos of the singer wearing an ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) in Hoi An, including many moments of him standing and sitting posing on the yin-yang tiled roofs of ancient houses.
After the photos were posted, many viewers felt the singer lacked respect for cultural heritage. "The photos on the rooftops of the old town are both sensitive and risky, and show a lack of respect for heritage," commented viewer Nam Le. Following the backlash, the singer deleted some of the photos of her posing on the rooftops from her Facebook page.
On the morning of July 11th, Mr. Pham Phu Ngoc, Director of the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Conservation Center, stated that after being requested by authorities to verify the facts, the unit had reviewed and documented the actions of the homeowner and the owner of the coffee shop currently operating in the house on Tran Phu Street. Mr. Ngoc said that the management agency had previously urged the owner to build a railing and commit to preventing customers from climbing onto the roof and encroaching on the heritage site. According to the center's representative, prior to singer Duc Tuan's incident, several tourists had engaged in similar behavior and were all criticized.
Mr. Ngoc said that, for now, the authorities are urging the owner to review the rooftop area, and if they do not comply, they will proceed with penalties. Regarding Duc Tuan's case, he believes it's difficult to impose an administrative penalty because it wasn't an intentional act of vandalism against the heritage site. "However, this is a story about respecting heritage, especially for public figures, because this action could set a bad example for young people," he remarked.
Responding to the incident, singer Duc Tuan stated that he had asked permission from the cafe owner before climbing onto the roof to take photos and received their consent. The singer declined to comment on the criticism.
Many tourists and celebrities have been criticized for posing in similar situations in Hoi An Ancient Town – a UNESCO World Heritage site. In May 2022, a series of photos of Miss Vietnam Giáng My posing on the tiled roofs of ancient houses in Zone 1 – a strictly protected area – also received much criticism. The then Chairman of Hoi An City requested the team that took the photos to remove them and worked with the relevant unit to rectify the situation.
The 44-year-old singer won first prize in the Ho Chi Minh City Television Singing Contest in 2000 while studying at the Foreign Trade University. His released albums include: "The Song of Truong Chi," "Duc Tuan Sings Pham Duy's Love Songs," "Forever Young," and "Music of the Night ." He has covered many songs by Van Cao, Pham Duy, and Trinh Cong Son, and successfully organized the musical live show "Music of the Night " (2009). In 2010, he won two Dedication Awards in the categories of Singer of the Year and Album of the Year . Since 2017, he has continuously released albums featuring music by Tran Le Quynh - 36, Phu Quang, and Tran Thien Thanh.
