On November 13, Reuters reported that EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that EU officials were finalizing the details of the 12th package of sanctions against Russia, which would include a ban on imports of Russian diamonds.
According to Mr. Borrell, the European Commission (EC), the EU's executive body, could approve this proposal package on November 15th. It will then be sent to the EU Council, which comprises representatives from the 27 member states of the union, for discussion and approval.
Since Russia launched its special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, the EU has imposed 11 packages of sanctions on Moscow aimed at crippling its financial capacity. These measures span various sectors and include around 1,800 individuals and organizations.
EU High Representative Borrell stated that, in addition to banning Russian diamond imports, this 12th package also includes measures to tighten oil price ceilings aimed at reducing Russia's revenue from oil sales.
Last week, EU diplomats said the 27-nation bloc was waiting for a green light from the Group of 7 leading industrial nations (G7) to proceed with an embargo on Russian diamonds.
