Last week, Robusta coffee prices recovered strongly due to concerns about reduced supply from Vietnam and Indonesia, leading to consecutive days of gains in the global market for this type of coffee, creating opportunities for Vietnamese coffee export businesses.
Furthermore, major markets such as the US and Europe are continuing to increase coffee imports, especially Robusta, to serve the production of instant coffee, which has supported the rise in coffee prices.
According to forecasts, major coffee-growing regions in Vietnam and Brazil are entering their peak harvesting season, putting downward pressure on prices in the short term. The strengthening US dollar makes coffee more expensive for importing markets, reducing purchasing power.
According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA), Vietnam's coffee export turnover exceeded US$2 billion in just the first 2.5 months of 2025. In particular, the sharp increase in world coffee prices during the first 15 days of March significantly boosted Vietnam's export turnover.
Brazil and Vietnam are the world's two largest coffee producers, accounting for nearly 50% of global production. Meanwhile, the European Union and the United States are the largest coffee consumers and importers.
Experts believe that coffee prices are currently under pressure from profit-taking after the US dollar strengthened against other major currencies. In its recent policy meeting, the Fed decided to keep the benchmark interest rate unchanged at 4.25%-4.50%, while also projecting two interest rate cuts of 0.25 percentage points each later this year.
According to the USDA report, global coffee production for the 2024/25 crop year is expected to increase by 4% compared to the previous year, reaching 174.855 million bags. However, ending stocks are projected to decrease by 6.6%, to their lowest level in 25 years.
