Muong Luan promotes livestock farming, creating a pillar for sustainable poverty reduction.
In recent years, Muong Luan commune (Dien Bien province) has considered livestock farming as the main development direction in its agricultural structure, helping many households have a stable source of income amidst the context of crop cultivation still being dependent on weather conditions. By November 2025, the total livestock population of the commune reached 19,544 animals, exceeding the plan by 124%; the poultry population reached 96,787 birds, equivalent to 107%. Since the beginning of the year, more than 6,800 head of livestock and nearly 5,900 head of poultry have been sold, bringing in a value of approximately 56.9 billion VND.
Not only has the number of livestock increased, but local livestock farming has also undergone a qualitative transformation as many households have switched to the family farm model, focusing on vaccination and hygiene in livestock facilities. As a result, the total herd has remained stable with over 12,700 head of cattle and nearly 91,000 poultry, exceeding 100% of the target.
In 2025, an outbreak of African swine fever occurred in two villages, resulting in the culling of 75 pigs and causing significant losses for small-scale farmers. The local authorities quickly quarantined and contained the outbreak, declaring it over on November 19th, thus facilitating the restocking of herds. Simultaneously, over 13,500 doses of vaccine were distributed and administered through mobile vaccination programs, ensuring the livestock were protected in a cyclical manner.
According to Nguyen Trong Hue, Chairman of the People's Committee of Muong Luan commune, livestock farming is becoming a sustainable poverty reduction driving force as people boldly expand their herds according to their capabilities. Many households affirm the clear effectiveness, considering livestock farming as an important "economic buffer" in conditions of limited land and complex natural disasters, contributing to the long-term stable development of Muong Luan.
