Jackfruit prices increase thanks to stable exports

After a long period of price reduction, the price of commercial jackfruit in the Mekong Delta region has increased again and remained at a high level, right at the time of entering the harvest season to serve the Lunar New Year 2026. Currently, super early jackfruit (Thai jackfruit) is purchased by traders from 10,000 - 16,000 VND/kg depending on quality, an increase of more than 5,000 VND/kg compared to last week; red-fleshed jackfruit remains at nearly 30,000 VND/kg. With this price, farmers make a profit of 10,000 - 15,000 VND/kg, creating excitement and peace of mind in production as Tet approaches.

Speaking to reporters from the Industry and Trade Newspaper, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that this price increase is not an unusual phenomenon but reflects stable export demand and strong domestic purchasing power during the Tet holiday season.

The price of jackfruit has increased again thanks to stable export demand, especially the Chinese market which is the main consumer market of fresh jackfruit. In addition, processed jackfruit products such as dried jackfruit and jackfruit snacks are also being exported to the EU, the US and the Middle East, contributing to stabilizing the domestic market and prices,” said Mr. Nguyen.

According to data from the General Department of Customs, as of the first 10 months of 2025, Vietnam exported 148 million USD of fresh jackfruit and 26 million USD of processed jackfruit products. Of which, fresh jackfruit exports mainly went to China, accounting for the majority of the turnover, while processed products such as dried jackfruit and packaged jackfruit are gradually expanding to international markets. Stable exports are one of the important factors that help domestic jackfruit prices not fall sharply and support farmers to have a stable source of income.

An important factor helping the Vietnamese jackfruit market stabilize is the Protocol on exporting fresh jackfruit to China, which was signed at the end of November. This agreement helps standardize export procedures and significantly reduce the rate of inspection of shipments from 100% to about 5%. Thanks to that, the time from when jackfruit is harvested to when it reaches Chinese consumers is shortened, transportation and storage costs are reduced, bringing clear benefits to farmers, processing and exporting enterprises. With the improved official export mechanism, batches of fresh jackfruit “made in Vietnam” will have more advantages when entering this large market ,” Mr. Nguyen said, adding that this signing will not create a sudden growth spurt as many people expect.

Jackfruit has been officially exported for many years, unlike durian which has only recently been opened. The protocol mainly standardizes procedures, making customs clearance easier, not causing demand to skyrocket. Our forecast is that the turnover can increase to 300 million USD, but it is difficult to create an explosion ,” Mr. Nguyen added.

Quality requirements come first

One of the key factors that determines exportability and price is product quality and food safety standards. Requirements include Cadmium residue in soil and plants, yellowing and phytosanitary, such as mealybugs or fungus on the shell. There have been some Cadmium violations in the past, but after publicity and inspection, this has decreased significantly.

To meet export standards, many farmers and cooperatives have continued to invest in land improvement, seed selection, fertilizer control, and strict care procedures. At the same time, cooperatives have coordinated with processing enterprises to register codes for growing areas and packaging facilities, ensuring transparency, convenience for customs clearance, and minimizing quarantine risks. This is an important direction to improve the quality of Vietnamese jackfruit products in the international market, while protecting farmers' interests.

Looking ahead to the final months of the year, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen predicts that the fruit market, especially fresh jackfruit and jackfruit-based products, will enter a period of strong consumption. Demand from China often increases significantly during the Lunar New Year, while the domestic market also increases purchases, creating significant support for jackfruit prices to remain stable or increase slightly.

In addition, jackfruit processed products also promise to expand international market share thanks to the trend of consuming convenient and safe products, helping businesses and cooperatives increase export turnover. The combination of stable domestic prices and stable exports creates a sustainable value chain, helping farmers increase profits and enhance the brand of Vietnamese jackfruit in the international market.

On November 27, in Beijing, Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Duc Thang and Deputy Director General of China Customs Trieu Tang Lien officially signed the Protocol on exporting fresh jackfruit to China. This is the 5th Protocol signed in 2025 and the 11th agricultural and fruit product of Vietnam recognized by China for official export. The fact that fresh jackfruit is "opening the door" to the Chinese market shows that Vietnamese agricultural products are increasingly meeting the quality and food safety standards of demanding markets.
