Global market developments
Today's steel prices (December 14th) on the international market recorded a slight downward trend amidst the lack of significant improvement in fundamental factors. On the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE), the price of rebar for June 2026 delivery fell by 17 yuan, to 3,075 yuan/ton.
Meanwhile, the iron ore market saw mixed movements. On the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE), the most actively traded contract rose slightly by 0.26% to 769 yuan/tonne (equivalent to $108.91/tonne). Conversely, the January 2026 iron ore contract on the Singapore exchange fell 0.34% to $102.4/tonne.

Influencing factors
According to Jinyuan Futures, investor caution stems from the fact that steel consumption demand in China has not yet recovered strongly. The market is awaiting policy signals from Beijing's Central Economic Work Conference, an event expected to guide growth targets for the coming period.
However, the fundamentals remain unfavorable as iron ore supply increases while steel demand weakens. Other raw materials such as metallurgical coal and coking coal also fell by 0.6% and 0.36% respectively, adding further pressure on finished product prices.
On the SHFE exchange, most steel products recorded declines: rebar fell 0.35%, hot-rolled coil fell 0.12%, and stainless steel fell 0.16%.
Domestic steel prices remain unchanged.
In the domestic market, construction steel prices today remain stable, with no new adjustments from manufacturers.

In the South, the market also showed no significant fluctuations. Prices for Hoa Phat, VAS, and Pomina steel remained stable, similar to other regions. Overall, businesses are maintaining price levels amidst a less-than-vibrant year-end consumer market. Future price movements will largely depend on construction demand, the progress of public investment disbursement, and signals from the Chinese market.
