Domestic pepper prices have been continuously reaching record highs over the past three days, mainly due to localized supply shortages. With prices returning to the 150,000 VND/kg mark, many farmers believe there is still room for further price increases before the Lunar New Year, leading to a tendency to hold onto their stock more tightly.

Conversely, export businesses are under pressure to fulfill year-end orders within a short timeframe. To gather enough production to meet delivery deadlines, they are forced to raise purchasing prices in the domestic market.

According to VPSA data, there are currently about 200 pepper processing and trading enterprises nationwide. Within this group, 15 large enterprises account for approximately 70% of exports, while 5 foreign-invested enterprises hold nearly 30% of the market share.

The pepper industry currently boasts 14 deep processing plants that meet international standards such as ASTA, ESA, and JSSA, supplying a wide range of products from black and white pepper to ground and packaged pepper. The VPSA chairman stated that businesses are actively leveraging the 16 signed trade agreements to expand export markets.

According to the International Pepper Association (IPC), at the close of the most recent trading session, the IPC listed Indonesian Lampung black pepper at US$6,996/ton (up 0.01%) and Muntok white pepper at US$9,645/ton (up 0.09%).

Data from the Customs Department shows that over the past 11 months, Vietnam's pepper exports have clearly differentiated across markets. The US still holds the leading position with a turnover of $373 million, but consumption decreased slightly by about 1% compared to the same period last year.

Conversely, many markets in Europe recorded positive growth. Germany, Vietnam's second-largest pepper market, achieved a turnover of $114 million, a 34% increase, thanks to recovering demand and more stable import activity. The UK also emerged with very strong growth, with import value reaching $49 million, a 67% increase, amidst rising consumer demand and stockpiling.

In Asia, India has emerged as a notable bright spot. Pepper exports to this market reached $74 million, a 58% increase year-on-year, reflecting the trend of processors increasing imports to support future production.

Overall, the pepper export picture after 11 months shows that the market is expanding in a more diversified direction. Strong growth in Europe and South Asia brings new opportunities for Vietnamese businesses, especially those that meet the requirements for quality, residue control, and international standards.
