Phu Quoc: MICE and green tourism ahead of APEC 2027

On December 12th, a workshop at Sun Signature Gallery brought together dozens of experts to offer suggestions for Phu Quoc to make a breakthrough with APEC 2027: boosting MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), easing visa requirements, increasing flight routes, and promoting green transportation.

Phu Quoc is preparing for APEC 2027 with the goal of repositioning itself as an international tourism destination. On December 12th, at Hoang Hon Town (An Thoi, Phu Quoc), the workshop "Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone – Taking Off with APEC" brought together nearly one hundred leading experts in economics , tourism, policy, and planning. Many proposals were put forward: developing MICE products, easing visa policies, opening more direct flights, promoting green transportation, and establishing special mechanisms to boost tourism.

New highlights ahead of APEC 2027

Experts view APEC 2027 as both a golden opportunity and a challenge for Phu Quoc to break through. According to Dr. Tran Du Lich , this is a "super" MICE event that could leave a long-term legacy for the destination's brand.

  • The main products emphasized are: MICE tourism, high-end wellness and relaxation, cultural and community experiences in coastal and island areas, night-time economy, and creative tourism.
  • The APEC Convention and Exhibition Center is expected to have the world's largest ballroom, opening up a space for hosting world-class events.
  • With the support of strategic investors, many projects serving APEC are being implemented rapidly, aiming for international quality standards.

Visas and accessibility

Currently, Phu Quoc offers visa-free entry for international visitors for up to 30 days. To increase its attractiveness, experts suggest:

  • Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan suggested researching a separate e-visa for APEC guests and the post-event period; and piloting the empowerment of private and community participation in destination management.
  • Associate Professor Pham Trung Luong proposed extending the visa validity period to at least six months to better suit the needs of tourism combined with work, while also attracting international talent and expertise.
  • Regarding air travel, there are currently few direct flights to Phu Quoc. Experts suggest decentralizing power so that the locality, and even businesses, can proactively connect with new flight routes from other markets.

Green infrastructure and transportation

Sustainable development is the overarching direction. Mr. Tran Minh Khoa, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone, said that the locality has signed a commitment to "Green Transformation," aiming for Net Zero. The Green Transformation project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.

  • On the routes from the airport to the North and South of the island, 100% of buses have switched to electric, no longer using fossil fuels – a first step towards "Green Transportation".
  • To enhance tourist capacity, experts mentioned the need for investment in tourism logistics, research into extending urban railway lines, and strong development of public transportation, along with cross-island projects.

A unique mechanism for breakthrough

Many opinions emphasize that Phu Quoc needs a special mechanism to develop its potential as a special island and coastal zone:

  • Associate Professor Tran Dinh Thien proposed a special zone regulation directly under the central government, granting Phu Quoc greater autonomy to "do things on its own and take responsibility for itself."
  • Dr. Nguyen Si Dung proposed maximizing the decentralization of power on issues that Phu Quoc can decide independently; extending the land tax policy; and attracting talented individuals.
  • Dr. Tran Du Lich believes that Phu Quoc has the potential to become a symbol of development in the next 10-20 years, with the important role of strategic investors working alongside the government.

For MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) and event professionals.

  • Venue: Sun Signature Gallery will be the venue for the December 12th seminar; the APEC Convention and Exhibition Center is expected to be the main event venue with a very large ballroom.
  • Visas: A 30-day visa-free policy is currently in effect for international visitors to Phu Quoc; proposals for separate e-visas and extensions of stay are being considered.
  • Connectivity: The number of direct flights is currently limited; monitor information on the opening of additional routes from new markets as proposed by the hierarchical system.
  • Local transportation: Electric bus routes have been operating from the airport to the North and South of the island, making it a suitable green transportation option for attending the event.
