Two agents of the Spanish National Intelligence Center (CNI) were suspected of sharing information with the United States and were arrested at the request of the investigating judge. Subsequently, Defense Minister Margarita Robles and two other members of the Spanish cabinet confirmed the information but provided no further details.
Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez, a member of the Socialist Party, is a frequent critic of Washington's foreign policy. Speaking to foreign reporters, Prime Minister Sanchez avoided directly criticizing the U.S. over the espionage allegations, but stressed that the incident was "outrageous."
Meanwhile, Spanish government spokesperson Pilar Alegria said that the Spanish national intelligence agency had reported these officers to the prosecutor, and assured the government of its full cooperation in the investigation. It is unclear what information these two agents passed on to the US, and US officials have not yet commented.
