426 doctors who passed the residency exam for the 50th cohort (2025-2028) participated in Match Day – a day for selecting residency training specialties, organized by Hanoi Medical University. The event took place on the afternoon of September 9th.

Students are selected for their residency specialization right in the auditorium of Hanoi Medical University.
In 2025, the School received 1,009 applications from students at 14 health-related training institutions nationwide, for 38 training specializations. Candidates were ranked according to their scores after the exam, prioritizing their preferred specialization.
The top scorer in the 50th residency exam was Dr. Vu Ngoc Duy, with a score of 25.09/30. Prior to this, Duy also graduated from the Medical Doctor program at Hanoi Medical University with a GPA of 8.11/10.
Having surpassed over 1,000 candidates to become the top scorer in the 50th residency exam, Dr. Duy shared his joy and surprise. "Initially, I only aimed for the top 20, but this result is probably partly due to luck because the other candidates were all very talented," Duy shared.
Duy said his decision to pursue medicine stemmed from the influence of his mother, who is also a doctor. From a young age, he understood the life and work of a doctor more than those in other fields, which is why he chose to study medicine.

Dr. Vu Ngoc Duy was the top scorer in the 50th residency exam.
When asked about the secret to passing the "toughest" exam for medical students, Duy humbly replied: "There's no special secret, just try your best every day, study carefully from the beginning, work diligently in clinical practice, and thoroughly understand the issues by asking professors and researching information."
Regarding Match Day, Duy admitted to being nervous about choosing his major in 30 seconds. With his first choice, he decided to choose Obstetrics and Gynecology, based on his interest and inspiration from Professor Tran Danh Cuong (senior lecturer, former Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, Hanoi Medical University), who shared many professional stories and motivated him.
Meanwhile, Ngo Thu Ha, the top student of Hanoi Medical University in 2025, has just been admitted to the residency program, ranking 14th, and has chosen Oncology as her specialty.

Ngo Thu Ha, who achieved top honors in both academics, ranked 14th in the residency entrance exam.
In 2019, Thu Ha was the top-scoring student nationwide in the B00 subject group and chose to study at Hanoi Medical University. Six years later, Ngo Thu Ha graduated with honors in medicine with an impressive GPA of 8.42/10, becoming a "super rare" double valedictorian of the university in recent years.
This month, Ngo Thu Ha will be the only student from Hanoi Medical University to be honored as the top student of Hanoi in 2025 at Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam.
According to Professor Nguyen Huu Tu, Rector of Hanoi Medical University, in 2025, after 51 years of implementing residency training, the university will continue to organize a Match Day event for successful applicants of the 50th residency program to choose their specialization and begin their studies in early October 2025. This is a unique recruitment activity, currently only available at the university.

The faculty members congratulate the new resident doctors of the training program.
Doctors choose their residency specialization after passing the rigorous entrance exam at Hanoi Medical University.
"Candidates are ranked according to their scores to prioritize their preferred specialization. Once they choose medicine, any specialization is worthy of research and contribution. The important thing is to be determined to study, train, and build capacity to become a skilled expert," the school representative advised.
Over the past 10 years (2016 - 2025), the major selection day has been a highly anticipated event, taking place in an atmosphere of suspense and excitement as quotas are gradually filled, bringing pleasant surprises to candidates and teachers alike.
To participate in the residency training program, doctors who have graduated in medicine, traditional medicine, or dentistry must take the residency exam immediately after graduation. Successful candidates will become residency trainees, undergoing full-time training for three years at the school and practice facilities.
Since 1974, Hanoi Medical University has been entrusted by the Ministry of Health with training resident physicians, aiming to provide excellent doctors and simultaneously train high-quality lecturers. Over the past 50 years, the university has trained more than 5,000 resident physicians, many of whom have become leaders and leading experts in the Ministry of Health, central and provincial hospitals, contributing to elevating Vietnamese medicine on the international stage.
