Once very shy and timid, this young man is now an active and enthusiastic student in studying, researching and working in the Youth Union and Association.
That is Pham Van Mai, Secretary of the Union of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Vice President of the Student Association of Duy Tan University ( Da Nang City). After many efforts, this young man has just been honored to receive the January Star Award at the Central level in 2023.
Change yourself through Youth Union and Association activities
Growing up in a farming family in Dak Lak province, Mai knew how to help his parents with farming since he was young. Because he did not have the opportunity to participate in many extracurricular activities, Mai was a shy student who was afraid of crowds. However, since entering the university, that shy image is no longer there, replaced by an enthusiastic student who dares to think and dares to do.
Pham Van Mai reaped many "sweet fruits" in his studies and research.

Mai said that the reason she got involved in the Youth Union and Association activities was through contact with her seniors. “Once when I participated in a volunteer activity, I saw the dynamism and enthusiasm of them. At that time, I thought this would be the image I aspire to during my student years. Therefore, I started to get involved in the Youth Union and Association activities,” Mai said. Since wearing the green youth uniform, Mai has been active in many activities, participating in volunteer trips to remote provinces. Then, when meeting and witnessing many difficult situations, Mai has more motivation to try harder. Thanks to his enthusiasm in activities and maintaining good academic achievements, Mai has received the title of "5 Good Students" at the school and city levels for many years in a row... He is honored to become one of the outstanding students participating in the voyage "Students with the sea and islands of the Fatherland" in 2023, and is one of the delegates attending the 11th National Congress of the Vietnam Student Association ...

Mai shared that thanks to her "destiny" with the Youth Union and Association activities and her active participation in volunteer programs, she has learned and developed herself more comprehensively. "I learned communication skills, public speaking, program planning, and teamwork skills... However, when I had a lot of time to work, I had to leave early and come home late, so my family did not agree. However, later when they understood what I was doing, the whole family supported me," Mai said.
Passionate about scientific research
Because of participating in many activities, it seems that Mai will neglect his studies, but that is not the case. Because not only is he an active Youth Union officer in the movements, Mai is also passionate about scientific research. This young man has achieved certain achievements. “There are 2 research topics that I am passionate about. The first is the topic "Collecting tire scraps using the electrostatic method", which won first prize in the Youth Research, Digital Transformation, Startup and Innovation Competition organized by the Da Nang Youth Union. The second is the topic "Using rice husks and plastic waste to create environmentally friendly construction materials", which won first prize nationwide in the VietFuture Future Innovation Award 2023", Mai said.
Besides the Union and Association activities, Mai is very passionate about scientific research.

Mai shared that he is currently working on two new research projects. The male student wants his research topics to always be closely related to life and have high applicability. In particular, Mai always desires to carry out projects that can help the lives of people in remote areas. "After the trip to Truong Sa, I am cherishing the idea of making a device to generate electricity from ocean waves," Mai said. Sharing the secret that helps Mai to be both active in activities, actively participate in scientific research while maintaining good grades (3.23/4.0), the young man said: "At first, I was really under pressure because I could not balance when there were too many things. But then I got into the habit of planning and making specific procedures for each week to arrange everything. I prioritized the important things first. Thanks to that, everything gradually got on track." With those achievements, Mai is one of the excellent students to receive the January Star award at the Central level. “When I heard the news, I was very happy and proud. This is probably the biggest award in my student life. It marks a milestone, affirming the efforts I have made over the years. This will also be the motivation for me to try harder and contribute more.” Associate Professor Dr. Ha Dac Binh, Principal of the School of Technology and also Head of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Duy Tan University (Da Nang), commented: “At first, I was really worried because Mai took on too many roles, from studying, researching to Union and Association activities. I was afraid that she would not be able to balance and arrange her time, but surprisingly, Mai did very well. In Union and Association activities, Mai is very active and enthusiastic. In studying and researching, Mai proactively proposed many very good ideas. Before, Mai was quite shy and could not come up with many ideas, but now it is completely the opposite. In particular, Mai has a very encouraging learning method. She knows how to apply what she has learned to research, helping the knowledge to be put into practice.”
