Khanh Hoa: Fear of flooding, students continue to stay home from school

Water levels in rivers in Khanh Hoa are rising, Khanh Hoa Hydrometeorological Station warns that the flood peak is likely to reach alert level 2-3 with level 2 natural disaster risk; fearing flooding, many schools have let students stay home.

On the morning of December 4, residents of Tay Nha Trang ward ( Khanh Hoa ) were worried about the news that the water level on Cai Nha Trang river was rising rapidly. The ward's shock force used loudspeakers to warn, many residents moved their cars to higher ground to avoid the risk of flooding, and many schools let students stay home.

Specifically, all 14 schools in Dien Khanh commune have announced that students will be off on December 4. In Dien Dien commune, 8 schools also let students stay home. In Tay Nha Trang ward, schools that will be off include Vinh Trung kindergarten, Vinh Trung primary school, Cao Thang secondary school, Luong Dinh Cua secondary school, Luong The Vinh secondary school, and Nguyen Dinh Chieu secondary school.

The principal of Vinh Thanh Primary School (West Nha Trang Ward) said that this morning when the water level showed signs of rising, the school urgently announced that students would be off school. During the morning, teachers quickly cleaned up desks, chairs, and learning equipment to the second floor.

According to Khanh Hoa Hydrometeorological Station, from 3 p.m. on December 3 to 6 a.m. on December 4, the province had moderate to heavy rain with average rainfall of 50 - 120 mm. Khanh Hiep alone received 200.3 mm, Son Thai 135 mm, Da Nhim 134.4 mm, Khanh Phu 129.4 mm.

At 7:00 a.m. on December 4, the water level of Cai Nha Trang River at Dong Trang station reached 8.15 m, exceeding alarm level 1 by 0.15 m. By 9:00 a.m. the same day, the water level continued to rise to 8.75 m, 0.75 m below alarm level 2, an increase of 0.6 m in 2 hours. On Cai Phan Rang River at Tan My station, the water level reached 35.92 m, 0.42 m above alarm level 1.

At 8:00 a.m. on December 4, Khanh Hoa Hydrometeorological Station issued a flood warning of level 2 natural disaster risk on Cai River Nha Trang. The specialized agency warned that in the next 24 hours, Cai River Nha Trang is likely to experience a flood with a peak at level 2-3, especially affecting the communes of Suoi Dau, Suoi Hiep, Dien Dien, Dien Lac, Dien Tan, Dien Lam, Dien Tho and the wards of Tay Nha Trang, Bac Nha Trang, Nam Nha Trang, Nha Trang.

The total capacity of 64 reservoirs in the province is 621.19 million m 3 , equivalent to 82.6% of the design. Many large reservoirs such as Da Ban, Suoi Dau, Song Cai, Song Sat, Song Trau are storing water at 76 - 87% and operating simultaneously to regulate. The reservoirs in the south of the province including Song Cai, Tra Co, Tan Giang, Song Than are discharging with a flow rate of 19.67 - 156.59 m 3 /s. The reservoirs in the north including Hoa Son, Da Ban, Suoi Dau, Cam Ranh, Ta Ruc are discharging with a flow rate of 7.6 - 28.76 m 3 /s.

Experts forecast that during the day and night of December 4, the province will continue to have rain, moderate rain, and locally very heavy rain with rainfall ranging from 20 to 50 mm, and over 70 mm in some places. The highest tide level will reach 1.7 m at around 8-9 pm on the same day, which can cause water to rise and increase the risk of flooding.
