Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên22/08/2024

Born with deformed legs due to the effects of Agent Orange, 22-year-old Hoang Thi Phuong, from Quang Long commune, Quang Xuong district, Thanh Hoa province, has faced numerous difficulties since childhood. However, with unwavering determination and relentless effort, she has risen to become a shining example for her community.
From birth, Hoang Thi Phuong was born with a missing kneecap, preventing her legs from bending like normal. Throughout her childhood, she underwent numerous surgeries to learn to stand on her own two feet. Even at the age of three, Phuong still couldn't walk independently and had to use her hands instead of her feet. It wasn't until she was four that she took her first tentative steps, albeit with great difficulty and struggle. Because of her physical disability, Phuong gradually withdrew from the teasing of her friends.

After finishing 9th grade, Phuong decided not to take the high school entrance exam but instead attended a vocational school for disabled youth, despite objections from her parents, teachers, and friends. This marked a new chapter in Hoang Thi Phuong's life. Studying in an environment with many peers with different disabilities, Phuong gradually became more aware of her own difficulties and empathized with those less fortunate. From then on, she constantly thought about how to help those in similar circumstances. After two months at the vocational school, Hoang Thi Phuong was inspired to return to high school. In 2020, Phuong applied to university and successfully passed the entrance exam for the Special Education program at Hanoi Metropolitan University. Although it seemed her physical disability would cause difficulties for Hoang Thi Phuong during her university years, the young woman still had a vibrant student life like everyone else. Furthermore, Phuong even used her own difficulties as motivation to help more people in less fortunate circumstances. From her first year, Phuong volunteered for programs such as "Giving Love to Children in the Highlands" and "Voluntary Blood Donation." Gradually, she gained the trust of others and became the Vice President of the Hanoi Club for Students with Disabilities. In 2023, Hoang Thi Phuong became a delegate at the "Shining Vietnamese Resilience" program, representing the generation of Vietnamese youth with disabilities striving to overcome challenges in life. Not only does she study diligently and actively participate in community activities, but Hoang Thi Phuong also focuses on maintaining her health. This young woman has a great love for sports, because for her, sports not only make her stronger but also relieve her stress and emotions. Witnessing the positive changes that sports bring, Phuong decided to register for a sports club for people with disabilities and has achieved several more successes in sports. Currently, Phuong is also honored to be part of the first national-certified referee team for Vietnamese disabled sports. Throughout her journey of spreading love, Hoang Thi Phuong has always had dear friends and teammates. Phuong expresses her deep gratitude to those who have always accompanied her from her first hesitant steps until now, as she continues on this meaningful journey ahead. For Phuong, the love of others and her passion for sports have completely changed her life. During her four years of studying in Hanoi, Hoang Thi Phuong has changed a great deal. No longer the shy, insecure girl who feared being teased by her friends as a child, Phuong now gets to travel, work, and explore her full potential. This young woman has embarked on a long journey with the mission of spreading love and has no intention of stopping. After graduating from university, in addition to working in the field of education, Phuong still hopes to continue developing projects for the disabled community. Young Hoang Thi Phuong is a living example of a positive attitude towards life, always able to soar into the blue sky with joy, even though life still holds many challenges ahead.
