Coach Ancelotti: "Real Madrid deserved to lose"

"The opponent played better and deserved to win," coach Ancelotti said after Real Madrid's loss to Lille, ending the "White Vultures"' incredible 9-month unbeaten streak of 36 matches in all competitions.

Jonathan David's penalty just before half-time (after VAR detected Eduardo Camavinga's handball) was the only goal of the home game for Lille.

Endrick and Vinícius Junior were the ones who had chances to score in the first half for Real Madrid, while Jude Bellingham, Antonio Rüdiger and Arda Güler also missed clear-cut chances late on.

"In terms of duels, our intensity, our consistency was not good. Real Madrid must learn from experience what we have to improve, this is quite clear, not very complicated.

Today was pretty bad. We played really bad football. It was hard for us to win the ball back. It was hard for us to transition. We need to attack more.

The feeling today was that we could hardly create chances. The team controlled the ball quite slowly, with few ideas. We have strikers who need to play more vertically. If you have difficulty controlling the ball and the ball reaches the strikers slowly, that will be a problem," coach Ancelotti pointed out the reason for the defeat.

This result leaves Real Madrid with only three points after two UEFA Champions League group stage matches and 17th in the 36-team rankings.

"The sadness comes from the feeling of the whole team that it was not a good game. Real Madrid should not find excuses, we have to improve.

I am very honest. The criticism for today's match is fair and correct, we have to accept it," coach Ancelotti concluded.

One positive news for Real Madrid is that this is the first time young talent Endrick has started in the Champions League, after the striker scored as a substitute on his tournament debut against Stuttgart.

Endrick became Real Madrid's youngest player to start in the Champions League, breaking Raul Gonzalez's record at the age of 18 years and 73 days.

"It's a great feeling. I'm at the biggest club in the world . It's difficult to play from the start. It's important for me, I'm happy for it, but not for the defeat," Endrick told Movistar Plus.
