Sharing the difficulties

The storm and floods not only caused damage to the eastern part of Gia Lai province, but also severely affected people in the western part of the province, resulting in heavy losses of crops and livestock. Therefore, upon receiving the invitation to participate in and support the program from DEVYT Group, and with the coordination of the Vice Chairman of the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee, Nguyen Huu Que, Tien Phong Newspaper assigned the task to its Central Highlands - South Central Region Representative Office to coordinate with relevant units to compile a list of affected households in order to develop appropriate and practical support plans.

Through discussions, everyone agreed on a plan to donate 41 cows to 41 households affected by the storms and floods in the communes of Ia Tul, Pờ Tó, Ia Rsai, and Uar. In addition, the program also provided cash to the households receiving the cows. The total value of the cows and cash donations in the program amounted to over 500 million VND.

The selected cattle are local breeds that are less prone to disease.

These four communes in Gia Lai province have barren, gray soil, making it difficult to grow crops (sugarcane, cassava, corn, etc.) due to the dry weather and severe water shortage. Therefore, for the people here, a cow is a valuable asset. At the simple handover ceremony at the Ia Tul commune People's Committee headquarters on December 10th, the people were present from 2 PM onwards to receive the breeding cows; leaders from the three communes of Pờ Tó, Ia Rsai, and Uar received symbolic plaques representing the cows for the people.

At the event, representatives from DEVYT Group expressed their hope that the local people would care for, nurture, and expand the herd of cattle. "This is a small gift, a sharing with the local community to help overcome the consequences of the storms and floods. We thank the leaders of the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee and the Tien Phong Newspaper's representative office in the Central Highlands and South Central region for connecting, accompanying, and working with the commune authorities to create an objective list. This is a gesture of goodwill from the staff and employees of DEVYT Group to the local people, and we hope this will be a meaningful tool to help them develop their economy and overcome difficulties," the DEVYT Group representative stated.

The cow handover ceremony was simple but heartwarming.

According to Nguyen Huu Que, Vice Chairman of the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee, the people in this area mainly grow cassava and rice. However, the continuous storms and floods have caused immense damage to the crops. Mr. Que stated that the western part of Gia Lai has many ethnic minority communities whose lives were already difficult. The storms and floods have made their lives even more challenging.

“After the floods, the Party and the State paid great attention to supporting the people to ensure their livelihoods and provided money for house construction. However, ensuring livelihoods remains a difficult challenge. At this time, we are receiving support from philanthropists, including the DEVYT Group. We hope that all levels of government and people will use this cattle breeding to further expand and develop the industry," said Mr. Nguyen Huu Que.

As one of the 11 households receiving breeding cows, Ms. Dieu Giang (19 years old, Jrai ethnic minority, residing in Van Khe village, Ia Tul commune) beamed with a radiant smile as she led the cow home. She shared that she had just gotten married, and both her parents' families were struggling financially, unable to provide their children with land or a house. She and her husband lived in a corrugated iron house, working as laborers daily, buying rice with every penny they earned. They had finally saved enough to buy a television when floods almost completely submerged their house, destroying all their belongings.

Mrs. Heo H'ui (residing in Van Khe village, Ea Tul commune), now over 60 years old, came with her daughter-in-law to receive the cow. She explained that her husband passed away early, so now she lives with her children and grandchildren, a total of seven people living in a cramped stilt house. “We have over 1.3 hectares of land, which is our source of livelihood, but the floods caused landslides, and the Ba River has completely submerged it. I'm very happy to receive the breeding cow. I will work with my grandchildren to herd the cow so it can reproduce and breed according to the commune's instructions,” Mrs. H'ui said.
