Supporting businesses against ransomware

Tạp chí Doanh NghiệpTạp chí Doanh Nghiệp30/05/2024

DNVN - To combat ransomware, the most fundamental and effective solution is to accelerate the data recovery process. This is also the solution recommended by many leading organizations such as the US Institute of Standards and Technology, the Singapore Cyber Security Agency, the Hong Kong Banking Association, etc.

At the Vietnam Security Summit 2024, organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Information Security Department on May 30th in Hanoi, Mr. Lin Guanrui, Technical Director of Data Center Solutions and Marketing, Huawei Enterprise APAC, gave a presentation on the topic "Protecting Data Infrastructure Against Ransomware Attacks".

In fact, ransomware attacked 66% of global organizations and targeted 93% of data in 2023 (according to a report by Sophos and Veeam), causing $42 billion in losses in 2024. This number is expected to continue to rise as the frequency of each attack shortens to just 2 seconds by 2031, according to estimates by the Cybersecurity Alliance. To combat ransomware, Mr. Lin Guanrui proposed the most fundamental and best solution: accelerating the data recovery process. This is also the solution recommended by many leading organizations such as the US Institute of Standards and Technology, the Singapore Cybersecurity Agency, the Hong Kong Banking Association, etc.

However, in practice, many businesses face significant challenges due to the ever-increasing volume of data coupled with increasingly slow recovery speeds. The three biggest needs of businesses today are: improving the reliability and success of backup processes; enhancing ransomware detection capabilities; and diversifying data protection tools to suit different workloads.

Huawei has developed a suite of secure storage solutions that enable the detection and prevention of ransomware attacks, as well as increasing the efficiency of data recovery, enhancing data center protection for businesses. Among these, Huawei MRP – the latest multi-layered ransomware protection solution – is the industry's first ransomware protection solution based on combining network storage technology with a two-line defense architecture and six layers of comprehensive protection.

Huawei MRP builds a comprehensive protection system for the pre-attack, attack-in-attack, and post-attack phases, strictly adhering to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Identity-Protection-Detection-Response-Recovery (IPDRR) framework. The solution has been certified by the international testing organization Tolly Group for its ability to detect 100% of ransomware samples through network storage in 21 different attack scenarios.

In the Huawei MRP architecture, the two lines of defense refer to defense on the network side and the storage device side, and the six layers of protection are also divided into two layers of protection on the network side and four layers of protection on the storage device side. At the Vietnam Security Summit 2024, Mr. Lin Guanrui shared about the four layers of protection on the storage device side for enterprise customers.

For storage devices, Huawei MRP utilizes four layers of protection: Ransomware attack detection; Immutable backup creating data copies immune to ransomware attacks; Fast, uninterrupted data recovery with reliable performance; and Physical network isolation using Air Gap network auto-switching technology.

Huawei MRP has also been proven to be industry-leading in ransomware protection when applied in real-world business settings. For example, in Hong Kong (China), more than 40 branches of a bank deployed the solution, complying with stringent financial industry requirements, keeping data secure against ransomware attacks, increasing backup speeds by four times, and flexibly expanding storage capacity to accommodate a 30% annual data growth.
