On the afternoon of September 5, Tuoi Tre newspaper coordinated with Nghe An Provincial Youth Union to organize a ceremony to award scholarships to students and support livelihoods for people in Quy Chau and Chau Tien communes. These are two of many localities in Nghe An province that suffered a lot of damage due to floods from storms No. 3 and No. 5.
Storms and floods add to students' hardships
Quy Chau Commune is a newly merged administrative unit of Tan Lac Town, Chau Nga, Chau Hoi, Chau Hanh - located next to Hieu River, which is often faced with natural disasters. In just the past two months, heavy rains and floods from storms No. 3 to No. 5 have submerged many villages.
Although the flood caused by storm No. 5 has passed for more than 10 days, people are still haunted by the scene of "flooding" at night.

Trying to find the remaining assets after the flood, Ms. Lu Thi Phuong (residing in Dinh Tien village, Quy Chau commune) said that on August 25, she heard that storm No. 5 was about to make landfall, with heavy rain that would not stop. By dawn the next morning, the water level rose very quickly.
"We tried to move our belongings higher but it was too late, so we had to abandon everything and run for our lives. When the flood receded, it left a mess, and many belongings such as televisions, rice cookers, etc. were soaked in muddy water and damaged," Ms. Phuong recalled.
Mrs. Phuong’s family has been poor for many years. What worries her more is that the flood has also swept away many of her children’s books and clothes as the new school year approaches.
Chau Thang Primary School, Chau Tien Commune, is located next to the Hieu River. After storm No. 5, the school was flooded nearly 3 meters deep, causing severe damage to the facilities and teaching equipment.
In the past few days, school teachers have not had a holiday but have gathered with parents to clean up and overcome the flood.

Since 2023, the school has been flooded three times, each time more severe than the last. Old water marks from each flood are still clearly visible on many of the school’s walls.
"We tried to salvage the items that could still be used, cleaned them and reused them for the children this school year. The continuous storms and floods have made studying even more difficult for the students because many teaching equipment were damaged.
Our wish is that all levels of government research and invest in moving the school to a safe place, helping us fulfill our educational mission well," said Ms. Trinh Thi Hang, the school's principal.

Sharing the losses and damages caused by floods, on this occasion, Tuoi Tre newspaper and representatives of Nghe An Provincial Youth Union presented 120 Preventing Dropout Scholarships (worth 3.4 million VND/scholarship) to students and 30 livelihood support packages to families (worth 15 million VND/household).
The total value of the program is more than 850 million VND from contributions from Tuoi Tre newspaper readers at home and abroad.
Deputy Secretary of the Quy Chau Commune Party Committee, Vi Van Hanh, shared that the students and their families who received scholarships and livelihood support today all come from difficult circumstances. Some are orphans or have relatives with serious illnesses. Many families had their assets swept away by floods.
"In mountainous areas that have been hit by consecutive natural disasters, people's lives are still facing countless difficulties. The support from Tuoi Tre newspaper today will help people have more resources to overcome and rebuild their lives," Mr. Hanh said emotionally.
Ms. Pham Thi Quynh - principal of Hanh Thiet Secondary School, Quy Chau Commune - said that this morning the school held the opening ceremony for the new school year, and teachers knew that some students did not have new books or clothes because they had just experienced floods.
"The scholarships came to the students very timely, helping them have more money to buy school supplies. Both teachers and students are happy!", Ms. Quynh excitedly said.
Upon hearing the news that she would receive a livelihood support of 15 million VND/household, Ms. Vo Thi Thang - residing in Lam Hoi village, Quy Chau commune - arrived very early.
Her husband passed away a few years ago, and she has been working all alone to raise her children. The recent flood submerged her house almost to the roof.
Ms. Thang was very touched to receive timely livelihood support from Tuoi Tre newspaper. "This support is very valuable, I will go home to buy a breeding cow to take care of, develop the family economy and have money to raise my children," Ms. Thang shared.
Many parents attending the scholarship and livelihood award ceremony were also happy to see their children happily showing off their new school bags to their friends on the first day of the new school year...
