The Vietnam Railway Authority has just reported to the Ministry of Transport on solutions to address critical points throughout the railway network.
In that proposal, the unit suggested allocating over 2 trillion VND to upgrade the Hanoi - Dong Dang railway line.
Regarding the reasons for the proposal, the Vietnam Railway Authority stated that the Hanoi - Dong Dang railway line has a total length of 167km, and was built and put into operation in 1970.

Currently, the cement concrete tunnel lining is showing signs of small cracks and water leakage, but this has not significantly affected the structural safety.
However, these tunnels need to be assessed to consider timely renovation and repair, ensuring safe train operation.
The route includes a total of 60 bridges, comprising one exceptionally large bridge, four large bridges, nine medium-sized bridges, and 46 small bridges.
Of these, the Long Bien Bridge is currently in serious disrepair and needs urgent renovation and repair to ensure train safety; the remaining bridges basically meet operational requirements. The line also includes 8 tunnels with a total length of 1,992m.
Regarding the track, the current superstructure mainly consists of old P43 rails and ordinary concrete sleepers, which need to be replaced with a new superstructure to meet the increasing operating speed and transportation demands of the line.
In particular, the line has a total of 67 critical locations that require repair and reinforcement of infrastructure as part of the annual railway infrastructure management and maintenance plan.
Based on the above situation, the Vietnam Railway Authority proposes the establishment of a Project to renovate and upgrade the Hanoi - Dong Dang railway line. The project will be implemented in the period 2026 - 2031.
The project will invest in items such as: upgrading and renovating the superstructure; improving the local alignment and increasing the curve radius at transportation bottlenecks to ensure train safety; reinforcing and renovating culverts, drainage systems, and weak roadbeds.
Simultaneously, the plan includes restoring track lengths at stations with limited track capacity, renovating existing stations to improve efficiency, contributing to increased capacity, improving passenger and freight transport services, and facilitating train scheduling; renovating weak tunnels to ensure train safety, eliminating black spots, and limiting speed.
The total investment is projected at VND 2,238 billion from the medium-term public investment plan for the period 2026-2031.
According to the Vietnam Railway Authority, the project aims to ensure train safety, improve throughput and carrying capacity, and enhance international intermodal transport with China and Europe.
