Although it was past noon, Mr. Tran Ba (62 years old) and his wife, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Kim Hoa (57 years old), were still sitting absentmindedly next to their stall, their eyes sad. Before that, Mr. Tran Ba's family imported more than 150 bunches of bananas and many kinds of fresh flowers to sell. The goods were brought to the market just as it started to rain. Receiving warnings about the long period of heavy rain from the Dong Ba Market Management Board, they carefully placed the goods high and tied them tightly. However, when the floodwaters receded, nearly 100 bunches of bananas and fresh flowers were carried away by the water into the river; the rest were also quite damaged after being soaked in water for many days.

“This flood is not much worse than the historic flood in 1999. The flood rose for many days, so the damage was quite large. Not only my family, but many other small traders also lost everything,” said Mr. Tran Ba sadly.

Mr. Tran Ba and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Kim Hoa try to pick up every bunch of bananas left after the flood.

Dong Ba Market is located next to the Perfume River, Phu Xuan Ward, Hue City. This is one of the busiest wholesale markets in the Central region with thousands of stalls of all kinds. The recent floods have caused quite heavy damage to the property of the small traders who are doing business here. The heaviest damage is inside the Dong Ba Market area. Under the market floor, the mud is as thick as a gang; tables, chairs, refrigerators, and wooden cabinets were swept away by the water, pushed and stacked on top of each other; many large bags of goods fell down, blocking the entire path.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Sang (61 years old) is a small trader who suffered quite a loss when all of her rice flour and related products such as wheat flour, tapioca flour, and vermicelli were swept to the floor and damaged by the flood. “Not only the goods at the market, but also the family warehouse was damaged by the flood, causing huge damage. Not only was property damaged, but now she doesn’t know where to start fixing it because everything is so messy,” Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Sang shared.

Ms. Bui Thi Thu Hang, Head of Dong Ba Market Management Board, said that compared to the flood peak in 1999, the water level this time is only about 10cm lower. The market has nearly 4,000 shipments, of which more than 70% were damaged by floods, of which nearly 800 shipments were flooded about 1.5m, the damage level is 100%. Along with that, the amount of mud and waste left after the flood is very large. In recent years, traditional markets have had difficulty doing business, now that natural disasters have struck, the difficulties have piled up for traders. In the immediate future, the Market Management Board is counting the total damage to promptly propose to local authorities and related departments and branches for support, to soon bring business and trading activities back to normal.
