The first eight Vietnamese players to qualify for the 2025 Ho Chi Minh City 3-Cushion Carom Billiards World Cup (taking place in May) are Nguyen Thanh Tung, Nguyen Dinh Quoc, Nguyen Thai Khuong, Ly The Vinh, Tran Quang Hung, Doan Minh Kiet, and Ngo Le Duy Thang.

At nearly 70 years old, Ly The Vinh still displayed impressive technique, creating an exciting and closely contested match against talented player Dinh The Vinh in Group G. Ultimately, Ly The Vinh won 30-26 after 26 innings to secure his spot in the 2025 Ho Chi Minh City World Cup.

The 63-year-old billiards player is a big name, considered a "legend" of Vietnamese 3-cushion carom billiards. In 1997, he went to Indonesia to participate in the 19th SEA Games and created a surprise for Vietnamese sports . At the regional sports event, he excellently won the gold medal in the 3-cushion carom billiards event. This was the first prestigious medal that Vietnamese billiards achieved at the SEA Games.
Over his decades of competition, veteran athlete Ly The Vinh has brought many titles to Vietnamese sports, including: Gold medal at SEA Games 19, Gold medal at SEA Games 22, and Bronze medal at ASIAD 16 (in 2010 in Guangzhou, China).
What conditions are needed to reunite with Tran Quyet Chien?
Ly The Vinh is among the first eight Vietnamese players to qualify for the 2025 Ho Chi Minh City World Cup, having the opportunity to reunite with younger players like Tran Quyet Chien, Tran Thanh Luc, Bao Phuong Vinh, and Chiem Hong Thai… However, the 63-year-old veteran still has to overcome four qualifying rounds before he can participate in the main tournament (32 players).
Billiards players Tran Quyet Chien, Bao Phuong Vinh, Chiem Hong Thai and Tran Thanh Luc are all in the top 14 on the World Carom Billiards Federation (UMB) ranking. Accordingly, the top 14 players on the UMB ranking will be given special exemption from the qualifying round, and will compete from the main round (32 players).
The second qualifying round will take place from April 7th to 11th. This round will continue to find the 8 players who will participate in the 2025 Ho Chi Minh City 3-Cushion Carom Billiards World Cup. All matches will be played on 8 high-quality, international-standard 3-cushion carom tables from Hollywood, using Hollywood cloth and Aramith balls.
