Opening of the 2024 ASEAN Capital Mayors' Conference

According to a VNA reporter in Laos, on the morning of September 18, the ASEAN Capital Mayors' Conference (MGMAC) and the ASEAN Mayors' Forum (AMF) took place in the capital Vientiane.

Attending the event were representatives of capitals and cities of ASEAN member countries; ASEAN Secretary General Kao Kim Hourn. The Vietnamese delegation led by Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh, member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee attended the Conference.

In his opening speech, Mr. Atsaphangthong Siphandone, Mayor of Vientiane, said that the MGMAC Conference and AMF Forum have been held since 2012 and have become a forum for local leaders to meet and exchange, a regional forum to strengthen and tighten the cooperative relationship between the capital and ASEAN cities, a forum to discuss and study ways to solve and handle common problems and challenges; and at the same time develop strategies that can bring benefits to the city and the region.

This conference, with the slogan “Enhancing connectivity and resilience for sustainable development of ASEAN cities”, focuses on 5 main areas such as livable and sustainable cities, green tourism, sustainable economic development, sustainable environmental cities, and climate change resilience” to exchange and contribute ideas as well as determine policies and practical implementation organizations.

On this occasion, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone highly appreciated the organization of this Conference, which is an important occasion for ASEAN Mayors and ASEAN Mayors to implement commitments made at previous meetings in the work of developing modern, livable and sustainable cities.

This conference will also contribute significantly to promoting development, exchanging good lessons to jointly solve various urban problems, along with organizing and implementing work plans and action plans to realize the commitment of ASEAN cities in promoting connectivity and self-reliance for sustainable development of ASEAN capitals and ASEAN cities.
