On October 22, specialist doctor Nguyen Thanh Ton, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa General Hospital, said that the unit had successfully performed surgery on a 4-day-old patient with congenital esophageal atresia.
Currently, the patient's health is stable and he will be discharged in the coming days.
Previously, on October 10, Ms. Vo Thi Kieu M. (residing in Suoi Tien commune, Khanh Hoa province) gave birth to a baby boy. A day later, the baby was discovered to have congenital esophageal atresia, unable to breastfeed and showing signs of respiratory failure.
The baby was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and required surgery when he was only 4 days old.
The surgical team of Khanh Hoa General Hospital includes specialist doctor 2 Nguyen Thanh Ton (main surgeon) with the support of a team of experts led by Professor Nguyen Xuan Nam - pediatric surgery expert (USA); pediatric anesthesia and resuscitation expert (USA) Tran Phung Uyen.
The three-hour surgery was successful. After the surgery, the patient recovered well, was taken off the ventilator, and was breastfeeding normally.
Doctor Nguyen Thanh Ton said the successful surgery has “continued the journey of life” for the baby, demonstrating the efforts and spirit of professional cooperation between domestic and international doctors in transferring and mastering advanced pediatric surgical techniques. This success opens up more opportunities for life for many newborns with severe congenital malformations at Khanh Hoa General Hospital.
This is the second time Khanh Hoa General Hospital has successfully performed surgery for congenital esophageal atresia in a newborn. In 2023, the hospital collaborated with experts from higher levels to successfully perform surgery on a 3-day-old patient with a similar defect./.
