Thach Thanh district is a major sugarcane growing area in Thanh Hoa province, supplying sugar factories in the region. In addition, sugarcane is also used to produce molasses for the local people during the Lunar New Year.
The craft of making sugarcane syrup has provided the people of Lam Thanh village, Kim Tan town, Thach Thanh district, Thanh Hoa province with a stable income, and many have become well-off during the Lunar New Year season.
The sugarcane molasses production village in Lam Thanh neighborhood, Kim Tan town (Thach Thanh district) has about 20 molasses production ovens. To supply the market, from the ninth lunar month each year, the molasses production ovens start burning day and night to produce molasses.
According to many families involved in sugarcane syrup production, this year the market price is around 16,000 VND/kg, so many households producing sugarcane syrup in large quantities can earn hundreds of millions of VND after deducting all expenses.
For the sugarcane farmers of Thach Thanh district, the profession of making molasses has been and continues to be the main source of income for families here and is also a traditional occupation, creating the famous Thach Thanh sugarcane molasses brand of this region.

The craft of making sugarcane syrup in Thach Thanh district is a hereditary profession passed down from father to son and maintained to this day. The work used to be quite arduous, but nowadays, with the help of machinery, the people have found it less difficult.
In the past, people would boil sugarcane syrup, bottle it in cans, and sell it at local markets. Now, with the development of the market economy , traders come directly to the area to collect the syrup and distribute it.
The honey-making process takes 5-8 hours; only when the honey becomes smooth, thick, fragrant, and has a golden-brown color is it of guaranteed quality.
Thach Thanh sugarcane is famous for its delicious aroma and taste, a brand trusted by people near and far during every Tet holiday.
Once finished, the sugarcane syrup will be bottled in containers for sale to customers.
With a selling price of around 160,000 VND/kg, many families making sugarcane syrup here have a stable income, and some families even earn hundreds of millions of VND during the Tet holiday season.
In preparing dishes for Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), molasses is often used as a substitute for refined sugar in cooking, such as making cakes, candies, and desserts. Additionally, to enhance the flavor of banh chung (traditional rice cake), a bowl of molasses is often served alongside the banh chung during Tet. Molasses has a subtly sweet taste that makes dishes more appealing and offers many health benefits. According to traditional medicine, molasses also helps treat respiratory and digestive illnesses.
