U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has called for the deployment of special detection and warning systems for New York and New Jersey following a series of drone sightings in the northeastern United States.

According to USA Today, Senator Chuck Schumer, the majority leader of the U.S. Senate, said on December 15 (local time) that he had requested the Department of Homeland Security to quickly deploy UAV detection systems and specifically nominated the Robin radar system with its 360-degree technology.

The request was made following a series of drone sightings in the northeastern United States, including several that forced a New York airport to temporarily close on December 13.

Earlier in the day, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas confirmed that the federal government was adding resources to respond to the recent surge in drone sightings.

Speaking to ABC News, Secretary Mayorkas said there are currently more than 1 million registered UAVs in the United States. He also mentioned the case of a Chinese national in Northern California who was arrested the previous week on suspicion of operating a UAV over the Vandenberg Space Force base.

Also on December 15th, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the federal government would be deploying a state-of-the-art UAV detection system.

The new measure was implemented after a series of drone sightings forced Stewart International Airport, located about 96 kilometers north of New York City, to close its runways for an hour on the night of December 13.

This airport serves both commercial and military flights and is located across from the New York State National Guard air base.

In an interview with CBS News on December 15, Mike Waltz, chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to be the national security advisor for the next administration, commented that the UAV issue in the Northeast reveals gaps in coordination between federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, local law enforcement, and the Department of Defense .

Waltz reiterated that President-elect Trump had mentioned the possibility of deploying the Israeli-made Iron Dome in the US, and that if operational, it would need to include UAV countermeasures capabilities, not just hypersonic missiles.
