Provincial People's Committee leaders inspect drought response work in Ninh Son district

On May 17th, Mr. Trinh Minh Hoang, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, inspected drought response efforts in Ninh Son district. He was accompanied by leaders from relevant departments and agencies.

After inspecting the Gia Chieu stream area, visiting the fruit tree growing area in Lam Hoa village, Lam Son commune; checking the sugarcane production situation in the May 1, 2, and 3 stream areas of Quang Son commune and the high-tech banana cultivation model in Tan Dinh village, Hoa Son commune, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee listened to the Ninh Son district leaders report on the drought response situation in the area. Accordingly, the locality is currently planting the 2024 summer-autumn crop, and the water sources in reservoirs are temporarily sufficient for production. However, some communes in Lam Son and Quang Son are affected by drought, specifically: In Lam Son commune, there is a shortage of irrigation water for the fruit orchards of households in the Cau Khi area of Lam Hoa village, and along the Gia Chieu and Le streams in Lam Binh and Lam Phu villages, affecting an area of more than 200 hectares.

In Quang Son commune, if the prolonged heatwave continues, there is a risk of water shortage for irrigating sugarcane crops belonging to households in the areas of May Stream 1, 2, 3, Dau River 2, and Lot 20 of Dau River, covering an area of over 300 hectares. After a field inspection, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee stated that the drought situation will worsen in the coming period. Therefore, he requested the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to coordinate with the Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited to find temporary solutions to create water sources to save fruit trees and other high - value crops in the district. In the long term, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and other relevant departments and localities need to conduct surveys and propose to the province a plan to build a water reserve system and pipelines to areas at risk of drought to cope with the drought situation should it occur in the future.

The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested the Ninh Son District People's Committee to continue proactively and focus on drought prevention efforts, prioritizing the provision of drinking water for the people; followed by drinking water for livestock and irrigation water for high-value perennial crops such as durian, mangosteen, jackfruit, rambutan, etc. They should effectively implement the plan for converting to water-efficient crops and apply water-saving irrigation models in production. Furthermore, they should continue guiding people to replicate effective crop conversion models to improve the economic efficiency of their families.
