The European Union and the Philippines reaffirm their commitment to the rule of law in the South China Sea.

The European Union (EU) and the Philippines reaffirmed their commitment to international law and the rules-based order at the 3rd meeting of the Maritime Cooperation Sub-Committee under the EU-Philippines Partnership and Cooperation Agreement held recently.

Both sides emphasized their stance of complying with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and fully implementing the 2016 international arbitration award, which affirmed the Philippines' maritime rights.

The EU and the Philippines jointly oppose illegal and coercive actions in the East Sea, calling for the peaceful settlement of disputes and ensuring freedom of navigation.

At the meeting, delegates reviewed progress within the framework of bilateral security and defense dialogue, discussed the protection of maritime infrastructure and responding to threats from shadow fleets. The meeting also emphasized cooperation in maritime training, safety, environmental protection, etc.

The next meeting of the subcommittee is scheduled to take place in Manila in 2026.
