Legend has it that Lac Long Quan was the son of Kinh Duong Vuong and Than Long Nu. He married the fairy Au Co and gave birth to a bundle of one hundred eggs, which later hatched into one hundred children. To expand the territory and build a prosperous nation, Lac Long Quan took 50 children to the coast, while Au Co and 49 children went to the mountains to cultivate barren land and expand the territory. The eldest son remained to become King, known as Hung Vuong, who named the country Van Lang. The Hung Vuong dynasty lasted for 18 generations.
